You need to say which timing cover you have as this will determine the type of pump you need.
As ChrisJC stated, the photo is of an early range rover (4 wheel drive) which has the pump high up to get the fan out of water etc when off roading.
P5/P6 and SD1 pumps are set lower and then the later pumps with serp drive belts are roughly in the same location but run counterclockwise.

So you are saying that the new pump won't fit the timing cover? If that is the case, then you have a 'car' pump, and need the appropriate '4x4' pump. All the '4x4' pumps will fit that timing cover, but there are variations in the shaft over the years.
