WHY THE DIFFERENT WATER PUMPS ON ROVER V8 ENGINES?

Why was the Range Rover water pump different to the SD1 and P6 water pumps?
They have different front covers for a reason but I don`t know what it is.
Anyone on here know? :?

I assume you are talking about early range rovers.
If you are then the Water pump and fan were set high up to keep the fan blades out of the water when off roading.

The later serp covers have serp multi v belts and the water pump was made to run counter clockwise to suit the serp belt set up.
Later range rovers have ride height adjustment for off road situations.

There were also various pumps and pulley arrangements for different ancillaries / fans etc.

When I changed from a pre-serpentine engine to a serpentine, I also had to slightly change the heater matrix piping.

The pre-serpentine pumps have an additional output for the heater matrix, which I think also allows some circulation around the engine (through the matrix piping) before the thermostat opens.

Taking John Eales advice when I changed, I altered this when fitting the later engine. He also advised to drill a small hole in the thermostat to allow a 'leakthrough' of coolant. Apparently, without this you can have a situation where you get a 'thermal shock' when the thermostat opens letting all the cold fluid from the rad, etc. in to the block.

This might just be because 'pre-serp' cars didn't have the pipework to allow water a bypass through the matrix prior to the heater valve being opened (could just be a TVR thing....)

Hope that makes some sense....

What I hope does make sense, is there is a reason for the additional outlet on a pre-serp pump (circulation prior to thermostat opening) - there's no outlet on the later pumps because this is taken care of with supplemental pipework from the intlet manifold to the matrix.

Not sure how much of a 'shock' introducing a radiator and reservoirs worth of coolant would be to a block...
