Hall Effect sensor

Post by DaveEFI »

Is there a hall effect sensor which has the same physical dimensions as the Ford VR one most supply with trigger wheel kits? Ie, will fit the same bracket?

I realise the wiring etc is different. :D

If your thinking of using one rather than a vR then be very careful, as they dont react at the same speed, so there will be a limit to how fast the crank can turn before they start missing teeth.
The VW 4cy halls seem to work well, but there are a lot of them that dont, hence why we use VR sensors,

Thanks Phil. Have you seen the DIYAutotune video where they show theirs good for about 20,000 rpm on a 36-1 wheel?

I havent seen that video, I think thats the fairchild sensor they use that is available from Farnell for around £20
When we were developing the wheel decoder code, I fitted a hall sensor to trigger from a 36-1 wheel. There were issues with the sensor at high engine speeds, but eventually it failed.
It was the first and last time Ive had to call the AA out, the sensor didnt like the heat from the engine bay :(

If you can get hold of the VW hall then I would use that, I think they are cheap enough too.
Why would you want to go hall rather than VR anyhow?
thanks,
Phil
