Rover V8 rocker shaft clearance..is this okay ?

Post by smoker »

Hi

I recently bought a set of Rover V8 rocker arms and shafts for my SD1. I noticed there seems to be quite a bit of play between the shaft and rockers so I measured them...

Shaft is 20.53mm

Bore of rocker is 20.65mm

I make that a clearance of 0.12mm which seems too much. Similar engines I have looked at advise up to 0.05 is acceptable but |I can't find and specs for the V8. The supplier says that they checked with Land |Rover and the parts are fine hmm. Has anyone got the official specifications for the rockers i can't find them in any service information I have looked at.

I really need to get rid of the dreaded clacking noise so I really don't want to fit these parts if they are out of spec

Thanks all

This seems to be a problem with some aftermarket rocker arms (quality control) more so than the rocker shafts if memory serves, I know V8D have seen this problem amongst a few owners in the TVR RV8 community :( good s/hand OE parts seems the solution at the moment. 8-)

I had some that were the same when i put my 3.5 together, in the end I fitted a set of used (but good) rover ones. They had much tighter clearances even after they had done whatever mileage they had on them!

Thanks for the replies :) i think I will send the parts back for a refund - it would be good to have the Leyland's spec for the tolerance on the shaft incase they wont accept if anyone has those :) .
The manufacturer says that the parts are within spec which i doubt with 0.12mm clearance..surely new parts shouldn't be sized to the upper specification of the tolerance

Have a look at this thread

I would say 0.12mm is too much. My worn OE rockers measured 0.09!
My new rockers measured 0.04mm clearance.

Thanks SuperV8 that's a most interesting thread.

I have returned my pattern rockers and shafts back now as they too had more clearance than the OE parts -(measuring across the least worn sections)

The low mileage Rover set I bought on ebay are about a million times better.
