petrol in sump ?? P6

Post by RICCO the TRIKE »

ok Im a v8 virgin.....be gentle with me... :D

symptom......running rich ...spark plugs ..black ..sooty ..wet .. :(

tried to set mixture by colortune ......can not get it to run lean ....
flame color shows running rich.......air screw in and out no change...

then I find my sump oil is contaminated with petrol .. :(

prognosis ....fuel flooding ??????? why .....

not sure if SU carbs (2inch bore ) are standard......NO ID numbers for reference .. :(
Im running a custom air intake with NO filters....
have cleaned carbs and set floats .....
im running a Facet pump...
fuel pressure reg ..= 2.5
tank return pipes clear ..

I get the feeling of a MISS MATCH ....needle to jet !!!!!!

any suggestions ??

Tricky. 2" on the Rover V8 are not standard. Hopefully your manifold has been ported to match the carbs!

Is it both carbs?, or just one that is flooding. You can tell if you look at the plugs. One carb does cylinders 2,3,5,8 and the other 1,4,6,7.

Is it pissing petrol out of the float overflows? (I guess not as you would have mentioned it)

Hi Welcome
check if the floats have collapsed or split, quite common problem and the net result is flooded carbs and ultimatly fuel in the oil. You can get a similar result with very worn float valves, but sounds like a split float.

petrol in sump p6

hi guys ...
thanks for your input..... :D

today I stripped and rebuilt carbs...took part numbers to verify what carbs I have.....
.
try this ....carb body ...JZX 1464....and JZX 1465.....

Piston LH ..AUC 1332B....S 2
Piston RH AUC 1332B S 4

Chamber ....LH AUD 4254....PDC 5
Chamber RH AUD 4254 ...PDC 12....

CARB CHOKE ....1 3/4 INCH.........

OK did the rebuild......new oil ......fired her up ....sounds nice....

did a check for flooding by taking off the chambers and piston.....
switched on ignition......facet pump ticking .......no sign of fuel coming up venturi.. :D ...which should mean the float needles are working !!!!

have I fixed it..??? wont know till I run it ......and check the oil for contamination !!!!!!!!!

ps ....when doing colortune ...I could not get her to run lean.....air screw in and out no difference....??

do I have a mismatch needle to jet ...????

cant think of anything else to try ......

wish it would rain !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi
If the engine is pretty close to standard, why not just do a rough check and set up with the carberetor piston lift pin, if it leans out when the piston is lifted it can't be flooding (or it would really flood!) and you can then get it pretty close at idle using the piston pin. Unfortunatly using modern unleaded high ethanol petrols the colour tune is very difficult to use as the colour changes very little from rich to lean. If there is any oil in the mixture as that tends to swamp the effect of the mixture.
What fuel pressure are you running by the way, much over 6lb and the SUs will not give stable results.
Best regards
