Choice of 2 lt77 Gearboxes-which one shall I fit ?

I have a choice of 2 lt77 5 speed gearboxes in my garage to go into my gt6 v8.
One is a 17A (rover 2300/2600),the other a CL number(TR7).Are they identical for the internals.The 17A box has no play in the shaft,but the tr7 box has about 1mm of play.I dont really want to start opening them up.
PS.Anyone got a gear lever to fit my remote-cant find one anywhere
