Valve lapping tools !! I'm converted :)

Post by mgbv8 »

I'm slowly being dragged kicking and screaming into the techno age!!

Hell! I even have a laptop and can use the internet now. Even from, my car :)

But valve lapping has always been a stick and sucker routine. I thought I was being slick by using my battery drill to do the first main cut before finishing by hand. While I was on Ebay last week I bought a lapping stick and a pot of paste for £3.99 inc delivery ?? Dirt cheap or what.

Then I saw one of those Gunson lapping things that gives the valve a shimmy back and forth and thought, what the hell! I'll try one.

I just went down to the garage to grab a cold one and found Jason using this thing on my heads. Its a cracking little tool once you get the hang of it. I'm impressed I must admit :)

So impressed that I grabbed TWO beers and told Jay to let me know when the heads were done

Hey!!
He has to earn his track time somehow eh ??

Ha Ha!!!!

Spot on mate.....

Not only does he have to let me know when its done. He has to give me a full report so I can copy and paste his notes into a report on company headed paper with my name on it. Then when a client asks questions about the report I get him to reply to me so I can also paste that into a reply with my name on it !! :)

Yes!
I have to work with Managers as well at work. Well actually its Sales Reps !!

I had a chat at work with the company owners last week about how inept our sales team are. I told them we need sales engineers. Thay asked the what the diff was between a sales rep and a sales engineer??

My reply was "About £30k"

My Jay is a good lad. And he works his butt off for me and the MG !!

Having a son is a handy thing as I've found out as well.....it's worth the abuse they give and all of the 'old man' jokes for the work we can get them to do. 8-)

My boy's just finished lapping the valves in on the new performance head for his Carlton. It was his first time so I had him do it the old fashioned way with the stick and sucker. No drill yet but he did ask if it could be done.

I reckon he's another Jay in the making. 8-)

No1 son works for me and he too works his butt off.
Would I let him loose on anything to do with my car?
Not a chance
He is a good lad though (still a boy at 31)
