Found it myself actually - "References to RH and LH banks of cylinders are taken viewing from the flywheel end of the engine."

Thanks Chris - I'll make sure to check that tomorrow.

A couple more final questions. When the overhaul manual refers to the LH and RH bank of cylinders is this from the drivers seat or facing the engine. I've assembled it assuming drivers seat meaning the LH bank is the bank with 2,4,6,8 and RH is 1,3,5,7.

It says "Check clearance between connecting rods on each crankshaft journal." and "Check connecting rods move freely sideways on crankshaft.". How much should they be able to move sideways? I can move them sideways a tiny amount which increases the clearance on one side and then reduces the clearance on the other side so does this mean that should be OK?

Thanks.
Nope. Looking from the drivers seat 2,4,6,8. is the RH bank

Damn it - I actually meant the way around you said but mixed it up in my head.

I'll edit that post to avoid confusing anyone else.

It's back in the P38 now and seems to work well. It feels a lot more powerful than my old 4.0. When I put it together it was much easier to turn over by hand than the first time I built it which seems to suggest that I did install the pistons the wrong way around last time!

The only problem I've got now is it's still making a slight ticking noise. I had a listen with a screwdriver and it sounds like it's coming from the front of the RH rocker cover. I'm going to take it off tomorrow and see if I can see anything when it's running with it off. I'm not sure what it could be because I changed all the lifters for new ones when I was trying to sort the noise with the old engine. The only thing I can think it could be is that I got the lifter preload wrong; I did put some shims in there to get the preload into acceptable range. If this was wrong could it cause a ticking sound? I'll try it without the shims anyway.

I've took another video for you to listen to. Any suggestions on things to look for now would be appreciated!

You could slide a feeler gauge between valve & rocker with the engine running to see if that makes any difference.
