Distributer choice.

Post by LandyV8 »

Help needed. I'm restoring a Land Rover which has a Rover Sd1 V8 in it. The current distributer has it's ignition module on the inner wing with the coil sitting on it. I believe this is a Lucas 35DM8 system. I want to do away with the bulky ignition module and want to know if I can fit a 35DLM8 system which has its module on the side of the distributer. If this is possible, will the distributors that are marketed by Powerspark on eBay be safe to buy or can some suggest a alternative supplier. Thank you.

You can certainly fit a DLM easily enough - but it may not be as reliable as your current setup. My SD1 had the DLM, and I had several amp failures over the years. My feeling is it gets too hot.

I've no experience of the PowerSpark units but do wonder how they manage it for the money.

You can use the DLM8. Clearly you need the distributor and ignition amplifier together. You should also get the right ignition coil rather than re-use the old one.

No idea about suitable vendors.

Chris.

Thank you for the replies. Power spark do a kit including a Lucas coil. I also don't understand why they seem so cheap.
