Well fitted the alternator today to check alignment and typically it is lines up between the crank pulley and the water pump. I could adjust it to go either way. The way to go I think is to leave the crank pulley alone and try to push the water pump hub almond it's shaft towards the engine. I found this image today http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthr ... ?tid=62754 which shows a P6 pump and the pulley is much nearer to the block than mine. I can only think that it has been moved along its shaft. Any comments?

Does the centre shaft of your pump protrude 4-5mm beyond the boss of the pump. It normally does to provide location for the fan.
If it is less than this amount then maybe you could push the boss further on to the shaft.
But I can't say if pushing the boss further onto the shaft will cause the assembly to jam!!!
Yes shaft does protrude, can't say how much but enough for a fan to slide over. Did we not compare measurements of pulley from pump face and find them the same? The weights in the balance rim are matched to a particular engine in the factory as a final trim to the basic balancing. If the crank is not paired to the rims then it's unlikely that balancing will be correct if a different rim is used.LandyV8 wrote:Also noticed on above photo link that the balance rim on this crank pulley is on the radiator side. The rims were used to trim/adjust the balance of the engine at the factory but they also provide safety retention of the harmonic balance ring should it become detached. Many don't bother to install the rims.
