Rover V8 pulley alignment
Forgive me if I have placed this in the wrong part of your forum. Please move it if required.
I have spent the last couple of years rebuilding an old a series 2a Land Rover. When I bought the project I had every intention of removing the scruffy looking Rover V8 and finding an original 4 cylinder to put in. In a moment of madness I decided to keep the V8 and rebuild it. How hard could it be? Well things have been going very well up to now. As space is limited in the Land Rover I have gone down the route of fitting a shorter water pump from a P6 Rover V8 and matching crank pulley. In fact I've gone one better and fitted a new Buick water pump and appropriate pulley. On fitting the crank pulley I have noticed that the groves do not line up on the pulleys. Initially I thought I had made an error in fitting the Buick pump but on refitting the old P6 pump the misalignment was the same. What is the problem? I thought at first that I may have lost a spacer that went on the crank before the pulley ( crank pulley is nearer to engine than water pump pulley) but I don't think it's the case. Could it be that the timing cover is not original, maybe its sticks out further and so the water pump is further out. I'm lost for any other ideas. Can anyone please.
The engine is a 3.5 Rover V8 from a Rover SD1 car.
Can I post pictures?

Pictures of the crank pulley and water pump and front cover will expose your problem

Thats why I asked for pics Tom.
I've just finished a re build for a guy who made every possible mistake that he could make on the (plug and play, or so he thought) rover V8.
Non pre SD1 2 groove pulley with a later front cover etc. When I looked the engine I wondered why he had the water pump pulley on back to front and about 15 washers to space the alternator forward.
And that was just on the outside !! Con rods all back to front, pre SD1 oil pump gears in a later casing that needs longer gears, dissy modified to mate with the wrong oil gears... The list is quite long.
SO!
Lets have some pictures LandyV8 to see what you have got ??

All that is true but the Rover P6 V8 crank pulley was/ is a single grove type that should line up with the P6 water pump. Thanks for the input though.topcatcustom wrote:IIRC some crank pulleys have 2 V's, perhaps the inner would drive PAS pump and something else, and the outer would drive water pump etc. Maybe you have a water pump pulley designed for something like that which does not sit far enough back for use with your single groove crank pulley?

Just go to photobucket and set up your own account. Its only a few mins to do for free.
You can upload pics directly from your pc to your photobucket library.
When you have your library done you can select any picture from the "view library" option and click the little cog symbol to give you some options. One of the options is "get links"
This means that you just hover the cursor on the picture and you will see the little symbol appear. When you hover over the symbol in the top right corner it will give you some options. Select the "get links" option and click. Then you will see the bottom option is IMG codes. Click in the text box below this and you should see the box go yellow and say "copied"
You can then return to the thread and then press CTRL and V to post the picture into the reply on here.
Or just email the pictures to me at perrystephenson7@hotmail.com and I'll share them on here for you.

My Series 3 V8 used standard Range Rover front cover/water pump/pulley.

Sorry, couldn't make it any biggertopcatcustom wrote:Any chance of resizing that pic?!!

Changed to URL, I need to import all those old images into some gallery software really.
Probably of little relevance anyway tbh.

I'm interested to know that you got your engine in with no front end mods. Did you move your radiator onto the front cross member for extra room? I choose the short pump route as this seemed to be the preferred option. Also my series 2a has it's lights in the grill which complicates putting a electric fan on that side of the rad. By increasing the gap between water pump and rad I hope to but the fan here.crayefish wrote:Why did you need to use a shorter waterpump? I just dropped a V8 into my Series 3 based racer (using a Philips adapter) and I just used a standard pump and pulley (with countersunk bolts) and it fitted with space to spare.
Will try this today. Did download flickr and Dropbox last night but they don't seem to have the option to send links. Thanksmgbv8 wrote:Just go to photobucket and set up your own account. Its only a few mins to do for free.

Nope nothing was moved... eventually a rear mounted radiator will be put in but that's because my current one isn't big enough for racing and it keeps getting filled with mud. Only think left to do is finish my bloody rear firewall and do all the plumbing. The only thing I needed to do for fitting the V8 was use countersunk pulley bolts.LandyV8 wrote:I'm interested to know that you got your engine in with no front end mods. Yes I could see that putting in a fan behind the lights could be tricky. My fan is in front of the rad. Is it the diameter of the fan that is restricted by the lights or just the depth? The former might be solved by two small fans (plus a small shroud) and the latter by a slimline fan (such as Pacet thin fan).
