Plugs leads

Post by Wilts289 »

I inadvertently touched a plug lead whilst engine running and got a belt. I then on purpose touched each lead and got a belt  from 6 of the 8. They are all dry and clean, so was this an easy test to see if they need replacing?

Hi
no not really, they are HT leads, the quality of insulation is dependent on many things when dealing with these high voltages it is not simply damp/dry, but the relation of central conductor resistance to insulator quality and any oil/dirt film covering the insulator and how good the ground planes are around them. They will still function fine as plug leads even if they give you a belt when you touch them. You may well find on another day different leads will also give you a belt.
Personally for my race engine I buy cheap copper cored non resistive lead kits and resistive plugs, good separators and keep the leads as far away from any bits of engine/chassis as I can and replace the leads often.
best regards
