think my new engine just died

Post by nokia_aid »

ok fitted a new engine had a proplem with the poppets in the carbs so fitted some recond carbs i got off ebay turns out they are crap and the one side overflowed and hydraulically locked the engine, took spark plugs out and turned it over to clear it, and started the car and its missing real bad, so put my old carbs back on and its still missing real bad,

have i bent my con rods or something

if it its the con rods bent will that be the only damage,

the idea in my head right now is i have my old block in the garage, remove the pistons and rods out of that and fit them in this engine with new rings and big ends.

£20 for big ends and £40 for piston rings

find out what is wrong first, sort out how to fix it when you are sure what you have to fix.

Do a compression test first to see if one cylinder is down compared to the rest.

i did do a compression test, they are all about the 140-150 psi mark, would one be badly down compared to the others if it was bent, it was running perfect before the hydro lock and now it runs like crap even with the original carbs back on, missfiring and such

Did the engine actually fire with the other carbs fitted, or did it crank over and then lock before firing or just as it fired ?
Have you got any idea of how much fuel has been lost?
Whats the dipstick reading?
If you can see or smell petrol on in the oil I would change the oil before attempting a fire up.
How did an SU overflow into the engine?

i tried to start it and id say 1 cylinder fired then it locked up right away,

not sure how much fuel was lost

dipstick reads fine and oil looks good

i took all spark plugs out n let it turn over a bit to clear cylinders then put them back in and it started but ran like crap so then put my old carbs back on (which ran great before apart from the revs taking a while to drop cos of poppets) and it still runs like crap.

was left with fuel pump running while i tried tapping it and stuff to get the float to drop n guess is built up in the cylinder, and i figured i would try to start the car and tap it hoping all the vibration and stuff would get the float to unstick and thats when id say 1 cylinder fired and it then locked up

At this time I would doubt you have bent a rod!
When you turned it over to clear the cylinders how much petrol came from the plug holes. Was it gushing full bore for a second or was it spraying liquid and air? And which cylinders spat the most fuel out ?

Which plugs were soaked?

If these are SU's did you not see fuel coming from the overflow pipe or pipes?

Are the overflow pipes open ended so you can see them?

i was panicking a bit so not sure which cylinders it was, i just whipped the plugs out to clear it.

when i cleared the cylinders it gushed out full cylinder, a lot came out,

it was coming out the overflow which i had piped into a fuel can whilst i was trying to get the float to drop while tapping it.

would be good if they are not bent just need to fugure out why its running so crap and misfiring.

When I bent a rod (hydraulic locking a diesel), one cylinder was noticeably down on compression.

When it runs, see if you can find an exhaust header that doesn't heat up, or heats up more slowly than the others. It might give you a clue about which cylinder(s) are faulty.

Also, what is the exhaust doing?, chuffing black smoke?

no black smoke at all, maby a bit extra exhaust smoke which i put down to either condensation in the exhaust or maby the unburnt fuel coming out
