Noise! not sure what is is - help
Moderator: phpBB2 - Administrators
So started modestly extending the port roof to take away the existing divet and straightening - will then put a dot Annie weld in the floor and raise the floor a coresponding amout - only about 5-7mm Is. But should improve flows and mid range gas velocity. Will perhaps bench the heads before assembly??? My floating bench it ok for development - but I wonder if dark speed would help me out???? ... it will help me make a wiser choice of cam also.

Spent so much on trial and error!
Have put 3 or 4 spot welds into the floor of the port (anchor welds) to fix the epoxy in well. Have also extended a mm or two since the last pics upwards and smoothed. Once epoxy in will blend the raised floor with the short side radius. Thinking about the bowls - these are all DIY by myself from last time, but thinking about the guide boss an throat- all blended well but should I "hog" it out any more??? (See pic). And am still thinking about the cam???

Hi guys, many thanks to all who have given me their opinion on cam choice, was just wondering, as the short block is still in the Landy and checking clearances is a little difficult with the engine in- what is the lift specs of the tvr 885 cam??? As I have been reccomnded a few cams such as the 214 and 218 etc, but just want to make sure that I don't go far from the lift of the previously fitted cam. Have the tvr 500 pistons with the valve cut outs (small) and billeted vales, had no contqct problems at all before, and if the new cam is not too far off the specs of the previous then I shouldn't run into any. Looking for a good mid range cam. Using double valve springs and now... Yes I went for them... Yella terra roller rockers!

Maybe you could reverse engineer this??
Why not drop one piston to the bottom of the bore and then open the exhaust and inlet valves on that cylinder to see how far the valves go down before the springs bind or the valve caps hits the guide?
You may have to make up a tool to do it. But it will tell you how far you can go with the setup that you have with regards to max valve opening.
You can then work out the max cam lift possible from the rocker ratio.
This is only a guide to see what is possible from your present valve gear.
You need to check that the valves wont foul the pistons during normal operation.

Just an update guys so if anybody wants to look this up as a later date - the cycle is complete:-)
The noise was a leaking CHG that had blow on cylinder 6
The rockers were shot (and a few cam lobes) due to far too much pre load - this also wrote off a lovely set of rhoads lifters
Heads cam off and had a little bit of fettling - which included lifting the floor and raising the port roof slightly- manifolds matched - a new real steel typhoon cam and standard lifters put in.
Had bloody dreadful trouble getting it started as initially the cam was 45 degrees out due to a "minor" error with the coyles roller chain! And then due to a series of problems with cheap oil filters and torn timing cover gaskets I had 2 weeks of trying to get propped oil pressure! Thank you to you all for your help and comments, especially perry:-)
Now running - with the NOS set up - took it for its first drive today - the typhoon cam (timed in standard) with the dual plane manifold and those 1.7 inch inlet heads is absolutely superb!!
It's faster then it was and is ok in Birmingham traffic! So if anybody jinks this cam is "too much for a 4x4" I disagree - although my Landy is only a shade over 1600 kg.
Haven't even given it the gas yet but on a long climb up hill it went flying past an Octavia RS!! There was a slight tapper noise when the oil cooler openned - but otherwise I am very happy!
I am sure tomorrow the bloody thing will blow up! And I will eat my words but for now it's

He's learning how to get the car down the strip and it wont be long before he and Dave are head to head across the line

Yes, he is a top guy! We had a long chat after at took his card for V8 UK! Really nice people, as is everybody I have met at the pod! We are both learning as I am also a newbie and we will use each other as a benchmark I think. I reckon I got lucky at the start:-). My starts are the real problem!! Wheel spin, followed by stutter! And a hint of too much mechanical sympathy!! Perhaps you can coach us both Pel??;-)
