How long is a piece of string ?

There are literally dozens of variants with the "LS" tag, much the same as there are even more variants of that engine with different tags.

I guess the one biggest difference between most LS tags and some of the others, is that LQ9 will have an iron block. Many others have an iron block too, although all LS tags are alloy blocks.....except the LSx lol which is iron

Really if you want to know all the differences, google or buying some of the various books out there would be a good start.

But even the worst LS variant will still be a great motor.

I am putting the engine in a ford 100e , it won't be to heavy , 12x 15 Micky ts road tyres , ford 9 inch axle , 4l60e gearbox , then as money allows i would like to have it turbo charged , I would like to use it at the drag strip and the odd run of a weekend in the summer ,

TBH, and as Ive recommended to others here, best bang for buck will be one of the 4.8 or 5.3 variants.
They are cheaper to buy and will easily make power

Just check LS1Tech or Yellow Bullet for the guys boosting the crap out of them.
Cars running low 8secs on almost standard engines with a load of boost.
Best bit for them, they can buy them for around $500 if they break.

They come in iron block or alloy block, obviously alloy would be preferable as they are lighter.

6.0 Iron blocks like the LQ9 you mentioned would be fine too if you're happy to accept the weight penalty
The 5.7, 6.0 etc alloy units just seem to go for silly money by comparison.

Have a look here for a fairly good overview of the LS family.

I'm currently working on an L33 for my Cobra project. Seems to be fairly easy to work on, light enough for two of us to lift it up onto the stand and as most parts are interchangeable with other LS engines I get a lot of choice on the specifics. As it is, I'm leaving it stock for now, but I replaced the oil pump with a new Melling one, and changed a load of the gaskets. I've also sourced an LS6 intake to lower the profile and increase the top end rev range. Might even get it fired up someday!! :D
