Good Books?

Post by jeboa »

Hi,

I would really welcome some opinions on some good books related to Rover V8 engines - or even just general info.

I have the David Hardcastle book 'Tuning Rover V8 Engines: How to Get Best Performance for Road and Competition Use' which I purchased a few years ago (now £899 on Amazon - WTH??)

Would love a read of:

How to Power Tune Rover V8 Engines for Road and Track - but again this is £255!!!

I realise these are out of date, but I think there's still some useful reading info in there, and I'm always looking to expand the 'little room' library!

Hi
I would have a read of as many of the articles as you can on here http://www.popularhotrodding.com/engine ... /articles/
yes there are no Rover engines but the principles of which modifications work are all there and as anything written in a book about the rover V8 is at least 25 years old that articles have the benifit of at least being fairly up to date. For more specific aproach concentrate on articles on the larger Buick motors, like the Buick 215 the 455 is also very head limited, especially those from the mid '70s to the mid '80s, how do you manage to get 195 bhp out of 7.3 litres? . There is an article in among the SBC ones on "pocket porting" chevy heads which is a very good "how to" article on porting generally and can be applied to the Buick/Rover. This lot atleast have the benifit of being free! :D .
If it is more specialist information you need, ie you are building an all out race motor of some sort and want a dry sump system, are looking for high ratio roller rockers, cam profiles etc. then I would definatly avoid the specific rover books you have mentioned, they are so far out of date now that very little of what is in there is still available to buy let alone any of it beng current thinking. First off when they were written before there were ford Mod engines to get pistons from and NASCAR chevys still used 2.1" bigends  and Merlin and TA heads were not available, actually it is questionable if either are available now but you get my point.
As for head porting above stage 1 get something that has a lot of general theory, read some of the threads on here then go buy a set off somone with a good reputation, if they were mentioned in Hardcastle they will have retired long ago!
Best regards
Mike
