Why go for an LS1 ?
Because you can buy them, complete with a super strong T56 for around £4500...
Some go for more, some less...depends on milage etc.
OR, dont forget, there are smaller brothers that will cost even less. There are 4.8 and 5.3 variants, that use the LSx platform, so most parts are interchangeable...and these base engines are even cheaper.
Or there are iron block 6.0 engines from trucks, that are also pretty cheap if you dont mind a little extra weight ( circa 40kgs )
But if sticking with the rover, and you arent going mad with rpm's...then I did have very good success with a standard low compression 4.6 bottom end....
But they were available new back then...and pricey then too.

You're all bleedin nuts!!!!
As Paul B and the rest of you seem to be suggesting a Chevy, I will have a look, but ultimately, I think there's only so far I can go with the power upgrades as I can barely put the power down as it is..... Bear in mind the car weighs 1060kgs and although I've beefed up the brakes, suspension and put some 265's on the rear, the only other upgrade left is bags of cement in the boot or something!.....

Traction can be down to alot of things but power delivery is a main ingredient and i fink you'll find the ls engines are good in this respect. Stevie sturbo does 10 sec 1.4 miles with 700hp+ supercharged ls granny monster! I don't think his tyres are much bigger. Anyways, you think you've got traction problems, i have a capri! My rear tyres are 195's! Try some toyo r888's, they stick like poo to a blanket!
V8'less but a fountain of dorky knowledge ref v8's!

Contacted Capa in Aus. n they can modify their Landrover V8 kit to fit the Vortech to my engine. Was gonna get a megasquirt and with all the help and useful advice I was getting from you boys, was gonna have a play myself.....

I think the high compression ratio on the 500 will need addressing.
I cant find it right now (its on pistonheads) but there is a company doing a SC kit for the 500, but only running 5psi due to the compression.

Right! .... I've e-mailed the Chevvy centre (might even go up as I'm just down the road) and asked about installing one of their lumps into my Trevor..... Might be selling a 5 litre rover soon, anybody interested?

Which LS?
the 6 litre iron block is getting alot of fans in the states as it is very very strong, at an extra 45kg it is still lighter then a gen I/II sbc engines with ally heads. The 6 litre heads are meant to be the best of the factory castings when ported out aswell.

Which leads me back very nicely to the reason I bought a V1 supercharger off the net...I don''t have/don't wanna spend loads of bags of sand, a net total of 3k max was my budget..... It would appear from what people have said that I have 2 options....... I'd probably need a bottom end upgrade for the 5litre to be reliable with the supercharger or a bit of faffing about fitting a small block chevvy, which then means the car is a bit of a mongrel and maybe devalues it?......

I would only offer the comment that there a couple of griffs out there with LSx engines in them already and the write ups of them I have seen would make me think it makes them extreamly deirable cars. The TVR 5.0 rover engine has a reputation as a bit of a delicate engine, especially when tuned to around 300-320 bhp however it is done, the LSx however has a reputation as very reliable and long lived at 350 to 400 break as it is standard or near standard tune. solid if tuned to 450bhp sensibly even on a standard bottom end and on the 6.0 iron block still able to take 550 to 600 on a standard bottom end. blown on a standard bottom end it'll take another 50 bhp on top of that. There are "street engines" on 900+ bhp in the states with turbos on the 6.0 block and forged bottom ends. there is even a 402 ci "crate engine" offered with a claimed 1400 bhp based on the 6 litre engine, it is meant to be one tough block (the ally block is said to fall apart over 800 bhp by some (the two cylinders by the flywheel fall off !) but others claim more can be got out of a "good one"

The 6.0 pointed out earlier is a bargin and virtually on your budget, you would probably get at least half of it back on your tvr rover lumpif you sold it, and that blower on it would put you well in the 500+ bhp bracket, you may need a bag or two of sand in the boot for traction but probably not as the TVR chassis is pretty good. I know what I would do in your situation!!
