Rover dizzy mod?

Post by woodchip »

Evening all, i've been told by my old man that there is a modification you can do to a rover dizzy using chevy bob weights that give it better advance

trouble is he did it that long ago he cant remember how/what he did?

so is anyone aware of this modification or have done it? if so is there a how to anywhere on the interweb?

I wrote this a while ago, I don't think that Chevvy bob weights will fit the Lucas dizzy but it might be possible to use the Chevvy bob weight springs. The gumph below mentions using a spring kit that Real Steel sell....

It is written with a 'slant' towards using an Edelbrock 500 carb. I don't know how well the vac advance system works with says SU's for example but it does NOT work well with an Eddy carb

A good article - and highlights all the shortcomings of dizzys when compared to a trigger wheel and coil packs. I went through all of that on my HEI dizzy on the chevy until I replaced it with electronics – I think I still have one of those calibration kits somewhere.

Specifically -
Getting the correct amount of advance in when you want it.
Vac advance is unpredictable and difficult to setup
Rotor to cap alignment
ignition slop through chain and drive gears
No ability to switch maps for better/worse fuels

An alternative to the coathanger method is to simply cut a hole in a old cap to see the aliginment of your rotor and cap:

Cheers for the compliment Eliot!

I can't argue over the shortcomings of a dizzy system, I have now modified my Lucas setup, it all looks very normal from the outside but under the cap I run my own base plate with an MSD pickup and no bob weights, basically the system is 'locked'. I run programmable MSD system which I fitted mainly for the NOS retard function but it gave a big increase in performance even when I programmed it with the same curve as my old bob weight setup.

I also spent a lot of time 'adjusting' each reluctance wheel spike in order to get all the firing points exactly 45 degrees apart. I rigged up the whole system to my pillar drill along with a spark plug in my vice, each firing point was then strobed and adjusted if required (It took days!).

Unfortunately the earth strap from my MIG welder was clamped to one of the bolts holding the vice to the bench, the HT blew the crap out of the MIG welders circuit board! :(

No sign of the OP being interested in any of this! :?

It pi55es me off when people go to the bother of writing replies to a post and yet the OP can't even be bothered to reply. We need an 'ignore' option on the forum.
