Only sparks when switched off!

3.5 SD1 in a P6 with optical lumenition. No spark at all except one fat one on switch off!
Managed to get normal sparking once when I bypassed ballast. Then blew the feed fuse and now can't recreate this.
Still sparks once on switch off. Swapped coil - it was wired to earth via ballast AND fuel pump in series, Not like the diagram I found at all.
I'm guessing wire coil direct from battery to rule out ignition switch and then bin the lumenition for neater Powerspark jobby?

Sounds like the amplifier is forked. Does the coil / amp get hot if you leave the ignition switched on?
