Will old RV8 heads work with EFI injectors?

Post by jonny m »

Been reading the RV8 sticky; http://www.v8forum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=133

And it got me wondering/worrying. I'm rebuilding an old RR engine block and heads, but to now power with EFI

The heads are 0216 from an 11D engine (old ones with pulsair holes plugged off)

The sticky says "On introducing fuel injection a small cutout was ground in each inlet port to clear the injectors"

Q. Will the old carb heads work/fit unmodified using EFI injectors, ie without a cutout?

I dont do EFI but I do use the heads on my carb setup. I assume that the small cutout is to make room for the injectors. So you should be able to nibble out a bit of ally on the old heads to make them the same as the later injector heads? Its no more that a slight dent in the upper face of the opening in the inlet ports !!

Think I've read the injectors do clear the old heads - but it's pretty easy to grind or even file some cut-outs in the old style heads.

:whs
the cut out is just to change the spray pattern slightly.

I think Bodger (Keith) has run EFi without the cutouts, with no noticeable effects.

Grinding out the hole isn't a problem, it's just that I've already torqued the head up, and don't want to risk swarf in the block

I'm hoping they'll just fit in, do I need to worry about the spray pattern though?

The swarf will only be aluminium. You could do the grinding with a vacuum cleaner right by the grinder as well. And make sure the valve is closed and blow it out with a compressed air line. And failing that, any bits will soon get fired out of the exhaust.
