What chevy ls engine is the best , all alloy or iron block , 5.3 or 6.0 ,

Depends what you're looking for? You can get a 4.8 iron block if cubes aren't a major concern or you can stroke a 6.0 out to 408 ci. Stock heads breathe well, check out ls1.com for loads of info

As said above it depends on application, all out drag/bonnoville applications it has to be the 6l iron block, for more normal applications the 5.3 ally block is fine. You will need in excess of about 800 bhp to worry about splitting an ally block.

5.3 alloy block is probably the strongest of the alloy blocks. Thicker liners, and thicker walls behind the liners. And more block deck between cylinders, so better head gasket sealing.

If only they were readily available here, they'd be a great swap engine. The 4.8's and 5.3's seem to be dirt cheap in the US too.

I have seen the 5.3 alloy engine on eBay for £1500 , it doesn't seam bad

UK seller or US ?

I wouldnt risk buying such a thing off a foreign ebay, unless it was a 1000% trusted reputable seller.

UK seller. Lives about 20 mins drive from me. He makes 60's F1 replicas and uses these engines as his power plant. He gets a load shipped in from the US and refurbs them. He also sells some off now and again a second hand engines. No warranty as such but I can choose the one I want. All less than 60k on them, IIRC. He said if I drop the sump and there was any sign of anything nasty he'd swap it for another one. Better chance than most second hand engine sales, if you ask me.

I also have a mate in the US who is happy for me to give his address to US ebayers for shipping to him, and he'll forward on to me. It may mean a bit more in total shipping, but at least I can get stuff from across the pond if needed...

Just cant help thinking their prices....well, it could still be cheaper to buy direct from the US given most are basically bare engines.

This guy's is a fair bit cheaper, and sounds like the guy Volo bought his from ?
