Cheers for the update, I guess we both will just have to live with the whine!mike-b wrote:Back again ...Had a word with CTS ( gearboxman ) today seems I have nothing to worry about, we confirmed I was using the correct oil 75W/90 semi synthetic from themselves.

Cheers for the suggestion Mike, I'm sure it would help.kiwicar wrote:Hi
you could always find an out of SFI date transmission blanket and strap that over/around the transmission, it should quieten it down quite a bit and being out of date they go pretty cheep.
Best regards

I wonder how much hotter the box would run?
Also just out of interest what do you mean by "out of date" Do they have to be replaced regularly?
Hi
in competition (MSA and FIA) all the safety kit is certified by either the FIA for European "round and round" stuff or by SFI in the states (or leicenced people over here) and FIA for dragsters, all of the certificates have an expiry time, 12 months, 36 months or 60 monthe dependent of class and what bit of kit it is . . . . . when the kit runs out of date you need to get it re-certified, there are very few people licenced to do this over here so often you have to send it to the US. With the cost of postage and duty and general hassel of UK customs it is often cheeper just to buy a new item. Transmission blankets are the classic item where it is just cheeper to buy a new one when it is out of date, often absolutly nothing wrong with the old one, just out of date!
Best regards

I was wondering whether any actual gears were involved when in fourth, my CR box seems to mainly whine in 1,2, and 3. My fith is not the standard ratio but it does not seem to whine. Dunno about fith gear with the Quaife wide ratios.stevieturbo wrote:I assume the noise is only in 1-3 ?
4th strictly speaking as no gears so should be quiet, and usually the std 5th is retained ( but not always )

Not in 4th gear it isntDaveEFI wrote:Well all the gears are still turning in a synchromesh box - it just depends which ones are loaded. The input shaft to layshaft one is always under load - so if that can be quiet, why not the others?
4th in most inline boxes basically just locks the mainshaft to the input shaft. So the laygear is never loaded, and no loads are placed on any gears.

Gentlemen, I will enlighten you with the answer CTS ( gearboxman ) gave me about the whine. I asked why every gear EXCEPT forth? Answer was it is the only gear that is a direct connection through the `box, i.e. the gear with the least gogs and a 1:1 ratio.
As it happens forth produces no noise whatsoever.
