Edelbrock power plenum

Post by martyn123 »

Hi,

Have seen these offered by RPI Engineering which appear useful for limited bonnet clearance,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weber-Edelbro ... 4613wt_689

Will there be any improvement ? and would you fit the actual filter out of a airflow area under the bonnet, thinking if air was forced in at speed would this upset the settings of the carb ?

Hi
I would avoid, it looks far too shallow to flow well, the closeness of the top would probably cause problems for the boosters on a 4 barrel, the hole through which the air is supposed to enter looks far too small and it looks like a really cheep bit of casting work, all in all a premier RPI tuning product! :barf

What a crock of shite!!!

How big is that hole for the remote air filter?? 2" 3"???

The circumference of a 14" pan filter is around 43".
times a 2" tall filter gives a free area of around 88 square inches for air to flow over a pleated filter with even more free surface area.

If the hole in that thing is 3" diameter it still has less free area than the bores of the carb doesnt it ??

If its 3" diameter it only has a free area of 7 square inches?

How does that work??

Please feel free to correct my crappy maths if required :)

The text says!!!

""This snorkle Power plenum was designed originally for the MG but is also suitable for 2WD vehicles. This is a slim line Power Plenum snorkel that is slimmer then the original Power Plenum we designed so it can fit to 2wd vehicles with small under bonnet space. ""

WTF!!

Nobody I know has ever seen this for an MGB.
And they cant even spell SNORKEL right.

If you have an MGB with a 4 barrel carb fitted and want the bonnet to shut you fit and edelbrock 360 manifold and use a stock 14" low rider pan filter.

I'd stick with a classic look low profile 14 inch chrome air cleaner. Or perhaps one of these Spectre substitutes

They are running a bit of a risk with the "Weber Edelbrock" in the title of the Ebay ad, as it suggests that pile of crap is something that Weber or Edelbrock have manufactured.

Hi,

Thanks for the info, i am due to get the car tuned shortly and need to sort out a decent filter, the one i have at the moment is a Edelbrock 1002 pro-flo which i have had to cut down slightly to fit which i now understand distrups the air, I just don't have the clearance for a 12" pancake filter.

I have looked on the Spectre Performance website and see they do a air plenum that may be of interest to me,

http://www.spectreperformance.com/index ... minum.html

Unfortunatly it is 3 and half inches tall and i only have 3 inches vertical bonnet clearance and as they are USA based would probably cost me a small fortune in postage and import duty. However i am sure if the product was suitable i could get a local company that work with alloy and TIG welding to make me a one off to my design. Using the a similiar design with a slight curve downwards i could then run a 4" outlet forwards so that the filter sits just above the radiator in cool air.

What i need to know is with a 4 inch single outlet will this give me enough air for a 1404 edelbrock carb sitting on a Rover 5.0 v8, i could always use a "Y"piece and use two filters

How do i measure what air i need for opimum performance.

Using a 4" tube forwards to get cool air it would be 24" inches in length, again will this cause air restrictions,

Apologies for the many questions but i am on a steep learning curve here,

Regards,

Martyn.

Use the 14" low rider filter with a 2" tall filter element fitted.

Hi,

I wish i could, life would be so much easier.

Problem is my marcos has a bonnet bulge where the filter sits and is only 8 inches wide hence the reason a pancake filter would not fit.

As a last resort i could cut out and make the bonnet bulge bigger but want to keep the original style/looks of the car and recently spent £££ on having a respray and don't want to have to paint again,

AHH!
I see your problem now :(

Real steel do a Moroso 8.5" filter thats 86mm tall. Maybe you could modify that a little?

Or try a Fly Eye filter like this. You wont get anything lower for your application.

I'm pretty sure you will find one on ebay uk or at USA automotive in Bedford or maybe real steel can order one. Theres not much to them and they can be trimmed down here and there quite easily.

Hi,

The Moroso is too big and the "fly eye" you mention is the one i have at present which i have had to cut down and really need to change.

Have been messing with various cardboard mock up's and i can make a alloy rectangle box 2.5 inches tall, approx 10"x8" in size to fit over the Edelbrock 1404 carb with two 3" circular outlets going straight forward into two K&N cone filters sitting just above the radiator which will be in clean cool air from the large central bonnet vent.

Any thoughts ?
