what gearbox

Post by trev h »

Iv'e just bought a new/old stock gear box from a ldv dealer for a V8 conversion my sons doing in a ldv 400, the dealer assures me it's the correct one as fitted to the ldv V8s unfortunately i cant find any info to confirm this, the number on the box is 35A0289745F so far all i can find is that ldv used a 30A box for the V8 so is this just a later version, the reason i need to know is it didn't come with the gear change linkage & he needs to source one for this box, it looks the same externally as a LT77/R380 so hopefully is the same.
If anyones got a linkage they want to sell let please let me know.

Hi
to confirm if it is a v8 one have a look at the photo in the thread above on Perry's conversion plate and see if the bolt holes and starter cut out look anything like the bolt pattern for your bell housing. . .
I don't know the bell housing bolt paten for the diesel but I am willing to bet it is very different.
Best regards

the remote will be a issue until you determine which box it is, the LT77 and R380 have reverse gears on opposite sides, so you do need to find out what it is as they ate not interchangeable as far as I am aware

You can use a remote off a LT77 on a R380 but you need to remove the gate for reverse and reset the bios of the hair spring that sets the gear lever in line with 3rd and 4th. This is what I did when I went from a 77 to a 380 on my Cob rep, I just run with no reverse gate, it's been OK so far!

Had a look at pics on sowens post of a LT77 & R380 & it would appear the box is a LT77 (or could it be a R5-150) went to a breakers & managed to pick up a gear change linkage, the pattern on the gear knob shows reverse under 5th so thought it's off a R380, what pattern did the R5-150 have as the reverse light switch is on the remote not into the box as a R380, so coming to the conclusion it's a R5-150, slowly losing the will to live.

The R5-150 had reverse under 5th, as did the R380.

I confess to being slightly confused now - I thought the R5-150 was an R380, just renamed by LDV (as they did with the Perkins Prima - they called it the TN-44). But when I read my LDV service book for the R5-150, it mentions it was formerly the 77mm (which I take to be the LT77). The illustrations have reverse shown as left-up, as per the LT77. But I can't believe that the R380 was being made at the same time as the LT77.

Would be interesting to get all 3 together to clear it up!

Chris.

If you think your confused you want to be here, it's not even my project son goes off to work & leaves me to find the answers, & i thought retirement was meant to be easy, Anyway connected the remote up & had a play & it appears that reverse is to the left, so going by the R380 & the R5-150 had reverse under 5th it's a LT77, now the remote i got has the knob embossed with reverse under 5th so presume it came off a 380 or 150 putting the bias springs on the wrong sides (presumably) will this make any difference or just go with it.
Going for a lie down now, nurse!!

little bit late in answering I know, but my 1995 LDV 400 (factory V8 manual) has the R5-150 box fitted. Looks basically identical to an LT77, with reverse to the left and up. Reverse switch fitted in the remote housing etc. First and second synchros knackered, will probably replace with a T5 soon!

P.S. pulled the gearbox and replaced the synchros, shifts like a new one now :D Learnt a bit about it at the same time too. R5-150 was the LDV RWD version of the "LT77S" as found in disco's and RR's up to 1994.Basically it was the last update of the LT77, with improved synchros, a nut holding fifth gear to the layshaft instead of a circlip, a larger oil pump, and a lot of other smaller refinements.

If you are considering retrofitting one, make sure it is from a V8. The diesel spec. version had a 3.985 first gear, where the V8 version had a 3.321 first.

From 1995 onwards both LDV and Landrover switched to the R380.
