Is this normal

Post by mcc1979ian »

ok so started stripping the 4.6 earlier for its rebuild and on removing the rocker covers found the innards of the passenger side to be a very dark (almost) black bronze colour and the driver side to be more a gold/bronze colour but with a single grey rocker,

is this normal or do i have a serious problem

sorry i havent a clue how to post pics but if you follow the link below you will see what i mean

The insides of the engine do go through various shades of gold / brown to black. Regular oil changes slow the process down.

The one rocker that is a totally different colour is more interesting though - I wonder if it's a different type or material to the others?! Perhaps it's ali and the rest are steel?

Chris.

iv got all the receipts for the vehicle and looking through them i believe its been well serviced and the engine was flushed each time,

its been done at brownchurch landrovers for most of its life so may give them a ring and see what they can tell me about it

If the breather system sucks fumes from one rocker cover only and the other has a small controlled fresh air inlet then one side sees all the engine fumes and the other get some fresh air. This may account for the different conditions in the two covers.
Not sure about the different colour rocker though, unless it's directly below the filler and gets washed as new oil is put in.

Just some ideas but may be rubbish. :D
