Trumpets and base: Rover 3.9

Post by Lord Steve »

Novice mistake I'm afraid: I left the trumpet and base assembly in a strong caustic soda solution and forgot about it.......for three days!!

Result is that the aluminium base is completely useless and I haven't been able to remove the trumpets (which are ok).
I anyone dismantling an engine with no further use for the assembly which they might consider selling or am I destined for a trip to the breakers?

I'm too embarrased to post a picture! I tried to rescue it with a coat of primer and some black hammerite but even my wife laughed at that. I won't make that mistake again......

Stop it you lot, I have thrown it away today after striking lucky with a f.o.c. replacement locally. (Thanks to Russ for the offer of a replacement - very kind).
I promise to post pictures of any further novice blunders involving strong chemicals and timing issues.......

Lord Steve,
Take heart, you are in exhalted company. When I was an apprentice, the boss of the overhaul workshop stuck a Sikorsky S-58T main transmission casing in the Magnus bath to strip the paint and varnish off it and being a Friday, one thing led to another and it was left in over the weekend................
Come Monday morning, all that remained of around US$10k worth of Magnesium casing were the steel bits..... The big boss was unimpressed, but could do nothing as he had started the ball rolling with a last minute rush job on Friday......
Cheers,
John
