Sump, Oil {Pick up pipe

Post by Chorlton »

I had two small leaks in my sump, probably from stones.
The fitted sump was removed cleaned and I tried to weld it up but it had already been badly modified with thin steel and it just continually blew through.

So, I took the sump off the spare V8 I have but it is a different shape with respect to the actual oil sump bottom area. Also the Oil pick up on the original car is straight whereby the pick up on the spare engine is angled to one side so it drops correctly into the sump proper.

Question. Will it be ok (I cant see why not) to swap the oil pick up from the spare engine to the existant one thereby allowing me to use the spare sump?.

I cant see any reason why not but someone might have an idea if and why it cant be used.

I also note that on the existant engine, there was no sump gasket, merely piles of red sealant? this isnt wise in my opinion ?

Be very carefull as the leg you bite today could be attached to the arse you have to kiss tomorrow.

The SD1 and Range Rover had different sumps and corresponding pickup pipes. Maybe you have one of each. Certainly if you change the sump & pickup as a pair, all is good.

A correctly torqued cork gasket is better than a wodge of red hermatite!

Look out for a soft cork gasket and a much harder black looking one. The aftermarket black one may not follow the pressed steel sump as well as the proper cork coloured one.
