Retro fit Hot Wire to Land Rover 90 - Fuel pump options?

Post by Cappucino-kid »

Hi All

After a bit of advice/idea's;

I'm retro fitting hotwire fuel injection to my 90 and was wondering what options people have used for their conversions i.e. internal/external fuels pumps, filter arrangements etc
Any pics would be great.
I have an early 90 with an under seat fuel tank with the single pickup/level sender.
My thoughts where to change this for the later 2 hole deisel tank and fit one of the long range fuel pumps that you can buy, however I'm not sure if these pumps are high or low pressure anybode know a link to the pump I am talking about is here; http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-PRC7018P

Any help advice appreciated, especially anyone that's been there done that ..........

Regards

Mark

I've always used an external pump. I'm not sure where I got mine from now, but the arrangement is like this:

The filter is the silver thing, and behind it is the pump, so you can just about make out the size of it.

This was on a Sherpa, but it's the same principle.

The one from Rimmer looks like a low pressure type for carbs. The high pressure type from that era is external, and the fuel rail has a return to the tank.

Look for one for a RR or SD1 injection. The original is Bosch, but there are aftermarket replacements. The same unit was used on other vehicles too.

It is gravity fed from the tank so has to be fitted below it.

Thanks chaps - a quick search and I found these - http://www.fuelsystem.co.uk/Out-tank%20 ... 0pumps.pdf

Dave - what about a Jaguar XJS pump, not sure if they are the same as the SD1 ones?

Can you use a normal fuel filter as a pre-pump filter, or does it need to be a specific type?

Finally what are your thoughts on using rubber (good quality) fuel hose with jubilee style hose clips for the full system - manufacturers always put hard plastic or metal with union fittings in their systems?

I have an EFi fuel pump from a Range Rover Classic (PRC8318). This is the one with a metal top like this:

http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-PRC8318P

It fits nicely in the front hole on my two hole underseat tank with no mods to the tank required. Only thing I need to do is make up a piece to extend it to the bottom of the tank. Plan is to unbolt the bottom half (see where the top of the pump "can" is?) then put my extension in and rebolt. The wiring has plenty of extra in it to allow this to be done easily.

It is best to fit a filter before the pump as well as the obligatory one after it for the injectors. But make sure it can cope with the low pressure gravity flow rate.

Quagmire what did you use for fuel filter, is it the early EFI one with the push on inlet and outlets?
Also what did you use to connect to the fuel rail feed - mine has a union type fitting on the rail?

Would love to tell you what I have done with the rest of the fuel system, trouble is I havent done it yet!

The only reason I have the efi pump in place is that my last fuel tank rotted through and so I had to replace it just before Christmas. I decided I may as well buy the tank with two holes this time, so the pump is bolted in merely to blank off its own hole!

:D

At the mo it seems that as soon as I start to think about ordering stuff to get the efi fitted something else breaks... That leaves me pottering about with carbs and MS running ignition only. What is so frustrating is with the MS working already I am so close!

All i need to do now is:

Sort engine bay wiring
Check TPS, IAT & CLT sensors (i.e lashup and check they read correctly)
Sort Wideband (my sensor died last year)
Sort airfilter mounting
Sort air intake plumbing... filter> plenum
Sort fuel plumbing
Fit Efi top end
Plug in
Tune!

Chris - thnaks for the picture - the filter looks to be pre-pump or am I being a bit dense?
If it is pre-pump - Does it work in that configuration without problems as Dave EFI suggests it needs to be gravity fed with a high flow rate?

The filter is before the pump. Both filter and pump are above the tank.

That arrangement worked 100% OK.
