contact breaker too electronic

Post by truckdoctor »

Hi there, I have the standard contact breaker ignition set up on a 1968 rover v8 and wish to change to electronic aftermarket package. Is there something on the market you could recommend that will look as original as possible, and would be reliable.
Thanks Steve

IMHO, the dizzy as fitted to the early RV8s isn't the best starting point due to the extra moving plate for setting the points gap. Something else to slop around. :D

Most conversions will require an external amp, so not ideal for originality. Although I soon fitted a Luminition system to my '69 P6 when I bought it in '72 - so although not original certainly period.

Personally, I'd fit a later DLM series dizzy - that's the one with the amp on the side. The costs will be close.

Hello Steve, Dunno about original appearance but I agree with Dave, the later 82-86 lucas 35dlm8 electronic ignition is tried and tested and is available S/H or new.

The circuit will be like this

If needed, you can mug up on the same type of electronic ignition here:

the first of two comprehensive explanations, to become your own expert.

I recommend you download, print and study the first 8 page PDF from that link then move on the the second Testing PDF when ready.

Steve

I use a Pertronix Ignitor set-up in my 72 Rover 3500S. Completely reliable (my daily driver) and retains original look, bar one extra wire.

Thank you all, searching around I found this
http://www.accuspark.co.uk/
Although they don't do a kit for the Lucas 35D8 I have ordered one and hope to modify it to fit. It is only a switch so no extra power gain here but looks are kept to almost original with just one extra wire that I may be able to disguise.
Thanks again I,ll post up my progress if your interested.
