Just a simple question about my IP address,
I was checking the security on my EMail today, to see if it is being accessed by my ex, which thank god it dosent seem to be, but I did notice the last 3 digits of my address alter, it give me an address --/---/--/---, and the last 3 vary between 97 and 109, all the rest are the same, could this variation be anything to do with the signal from my modem/router
????

It's just DHCP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhcp) doing its thing. You are likely to get a different IP address everytime you switch your computer on.

Wont be anything to do with his PC whether it is DHCP or not as that is a private address and not public. His email will only ever see the public IP address which if it is general home internet will almost certainly be DHCP and on the router unless you paid for a fixed IP.r2d2hp wrote:Hi Ian,
If you have DHCP enabled then its possible to pick up different values from the router.
To check if DHCP is enabled type ipconfig /all from the cmd prompt. if it is to check the range configured you would need to log on to the router

Go to who is or something like that and put the two IP addresses in, if they both come up as your ISP your fine. Pretty sure your fine though and it will just be the address swapping.

The IP address the computer uses between itself and your router isn't a secret. Next door could have exactly the same one. Commonly 192.168.1.xxx where xxx is an individual numbers used by machines on your LAN. If you plug in any computer to your LAN it should link to it with no further action. A wireless connection should require setting up - to prevent passers by etc using it.
The IP number used between your router and ISP isn't secure either. Your mailbox there should be individually protected by your own password known only to you.
