No forward drive ZF4HP22 Range Rover Classic

Post by dod51e »

I am sure this has been covered before but a bit of confirmation would be good.

Forward drive on the RRC has gone South but still engages in reverse.

History; This afternoon I felt a bit of vibration on initial acceleration. Later this afternoon the same again followed by revs rising without expected increase in speed (slipping box?) which in turn was followed by a total loss of forward drive. Nothing in D, 3, 2 or 1 but reverse cluncks in as normal.

I suspect that the 'A clutch' has burned out????

If this is the case (please feel free to correct me) where can one get the replacement parts and does anyone have any confirmation of the parts/part numbers required?

Cheers

When my gearbox failed I had been towing with the RR, I knew box was failing as govenor control was poor, parked car, went to move it dropped it into reverse and there was a bang  then there was no drive forwared or back

When I drained the oil you could see the grey metallic fillings

I was looking at Ashcroft for a recon, I thought there prices were comparable to other aurobox repair companies inc local to me) but offered a better product due to there specialist experience. Mind was @ 700 +vat

Anyway a box came up local on ebay and I took a chance on the £10 box as it was just labour to fit(myself) any way 2 years on and all OK....so far :) .

Would be nice to see a repair manual for this box, although I think my old one is beyond DIY repair.

I am hoping eventually when I uprate the RR to @ 5.0l I will buy an uprated box from Ashcroft..................one day
Regards
Royston

That is I.

Read my page, it's got references to the part supplier I used.

I've got an exploded parts diagram if you need one - PM your e-mail address me if you want it.

Chris.

''Forward drive on the RRC has gone South but still engages in reverse''

Equals failed A or sprag clutch - very common.

As chris notes in his pictures, you need to make some sort of cradle.
I've had one fall off a trolley jack and I gashed my hand badly.
Initally i made a big flat plate that attached to the trolley jack, then later on i purchased a proper tranny jack which is far far better (£100) as it allows you to move it around easily - and you can attach the transfer box before you lift it up.
