Rover Valve Guide clearance quesrtion!

Post by Jono FD3 »

Guys, I put 2 valves in the head with the springs etc. and dropped it on the block (with a dummy 1mm gasket) put the valve train on and the preload looks to be about right: 25 - 30 thou, but when the cam is on full lift there is only about 45 thou clearance between the spring retainer and the top of the valve stem:

Now, I've got some valve stem oil seals from a Vauxhall that people use on these heads, but obviously I'm not going to have the clearance and the spring retainer will just destroy the seal if I put them on the way it is (there is actualy contact with the stock rubber washer type seal aswell!!)
So, my options are: Mill off about 3mm off the top of the guide, or draw the guide further in to the head........ what would you do??

Cheers
Jono

There is no check spring on the valve Jono?
That means the valve has just dropped to where it wants to sit.

Where is the piston for the valve in that picture ?

the cam is at max lift in the pic with about 30thou lash and I am holding the valve against the rocker (although that pic is upside down!)
Hope that makes sence?

0.09" minium. My engine runs approx +0.1"

Do not press those guides in the head. They will resist air flow more and might be loosened. Milling is way to go.

If you are going to get them machined down, get them done with the reduced width at the top so you can fit later style push on stem seals.
I've done this on lots of older heads to replace the naff rubber washers.
