Timing up a V8 Development MC1 cam
Hi Guys,
Mr. Muscle Manta and I are building a 3.9 lump for a friend so I though that I ask for your thoughts on timing up the cam. I would ask V8 Dev but after the debacle that occurred during getting the short engine off them I don't think that we are in there good books at the moment! (Even though it was their fault!)
Anyway the engine will be running the MC1 cam, stage 2 V8 Dev heads, an Eddy Performer manifold and Eddy carb. We are skimming the heads to push the CR up to 10:1. The timing chain is Cloydes and we have the option of timing the cam straight up or advanced or retarded 3 degrees.
I understand the idea behind changing the cam timing but have often wondered why the cam is just not ground with with the advance/retard built in, I guess it's to fine tune the cam. I've read that retarding the cam gives a bit more top end but has anyone actually tried this?

I think the Cloyes gear should give you a total adjustment of 4 degree's. Thats +2 or -2 from stock setting at the cam.
4 degree's crank = 2 degree's on the cam.
Retarding the cam will move the torque further up the rev range and vice versa.
But the only way to get a handle on the tune is to dyno it at stock setting then adjust if required. I run mine retarded to get the torque up in the hig rev range because using the blower and nitrous gets me off the line pretty quick so i need as much oomph as I can get when I run out of gears
I have no idea what a MC1 cam is. I use a RS blower / turbo cam.

Rob Robertson is the man to speak too. It wouldnt suprise me if he actually designed the profile in the first place.
Good info Del!!
PS
If you need to speak to a guy who KNOWS how to build a Rover V8 PROPERLY I can put you in touch with him ??

Basically a late delivery of it and three of us had taken a day off work as we were expecting the engine. My mate phoned up V8 Dev, he was told to phone the courier himself, not good customer service!POAH wrote:what happened with the engine?
Anyway he phoned up the courier who said that they would not deliver it until V8 Dev had paid their bills! My mate then phoned V8 who then said that he should have not been told that!

The sale of the short engine was a private deal between Rob and my mate but his only contact was through V8 Dev's number and it was due to V8 Dev's late payment of money owed which caused the delay in the arrival of it so from our point of view the two are connected.
My mate also bought the camshaft and a load of other stuff of V8 Dev that must have amounted to a few hundred quid on top of the price of the short engine.
Anyway the short engine does seem to be in decent nick and the price was good so at least that's OK.

Hi Pel, long time indeed!! I've sold my old Cobra and am halfway through my new build (see signature for my website with build diary), 383 Chevy with the same Jenvey throttle bodies so should be a bit faster than my old Rovermgbv8 wrote:Ha Ha!!Cobratone wrote:Who Me??mgbv8 wrote:If you need to speak to a guy who KNOWS how to build a Rover V8 PROPERLY I can put you in touch with him ??

If it's on the road then I'll definitely come to another RR as really enjoyed the last one

Hi Lester ,
Is there a major problem with the cobra forum ? It's been "off air" for quite a few days now.
