Salisbury axle ratio's

Post by marcjagman »

May need to alter the ratios in an 88" landrover hybrid. Will have a 3.9 RV8 and probably an auto box. Trying to get better cruising speeds/top speed but may also do a little rough stuff for bit of a laugh. Can you get different CWP for the front and rear diffs? Would like 3.5:1-3.8:1 if they are available, no idea where to start looking.

All coil sprung Land Rover vehicles are 3.54:1 diff ratio.

I assume the "hybrid" means it's had a salisbury fitted, as 88" Landies never had them AFAIK, and you'll obviously have to pick a ratio that you can match in the front axle. You could get round it by altering the transfer box ratio as I think there are gearsets to alter those for higher ratios, depending on the box type.

Really? So a a pair matched axles should do the trick. What years or series would they be? Any idea what the ratio's are for freelander and range rover?

Yes. But if your hybrid is staying leaf-sprung, it is easier to get some diffs from a Range Rover classic and just swap the diff. There are 10-spline halfshafts and 24-spline half-shafts, so you need to make sure you get the type to suit your setup. Front and rear diffs are basically the same, but some front diffs have a fixing on the bottom for a steering damper.

I can't recall if the propshaft flanges are the same, but you're probably having to make up propshafts anyway.

If you have a salisbury axle (not sure that you have if it's an 88" Landie), you will need to swap the whole axle as a diff swap isn't a DIY job. But then you will have to weld on leaf-spring mounts etc.

Not having leaf springs, just really wanting to know what axles will give the ratio's that I'm after.
