LT77 Short Remotes

Post by Staghunter »

I'm trying to adapt an LT77 gearbox from a TR7 to a Stag engine, which is relatively simple since the bell housing bolts right on but for a couple of bolts and a required spacer. I have most of this worked out, but I'm still struggling a little with the shift remote. The TR7 remote is 5" too long, and you can't take that much out in a cut and shut operation. I'l told the Sherpa short remote will fit, but it's actually too short and body modifications are required. I don't want to do that.

I think I can adapt the Sherpa remote by fabricating spacers, but I'm wondering if there's an easier way. I'm told that some Jaguar Series III XJ6 sedans were equipped with an LT77 gearbox and a short remote. None of these were ever sold here in the US, but perhaps they were plentiful over there. Does anyone have any information on these, or are they so rare as to be unobtainable?

The Sherpa Remote moves the gear lever about 2" aft of the mounting point on the rear extension. I need something more like three.

Failing this, does anyone have any information on parts for the Sherpa remotes? I have one but it's badly worn and the gear lever is broken. Are there any sources of new or used parts for these?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Stag
I use a Jag remote on my car with the 77 and can take measurements for you next week if this helps ( am away from home at the moment)
As far as I know the Jag units are quite rare but would suggest that you have a bit of a surf and see if you can find a Jag specialist either over there or in the UK.
Not sure but may have a spare cut down 77 remote at home which again i can measure and let you know.
IF yes and you would like to have it I can send it over to you.
Cheers

the sherpa and the Jag are very similar in length, The normal remote can be shortened to about the same length as the sherpa with careful welding, so the normal TR remote should be able to be shortened to suit your needs with out any major drama, you may have to modify the springs on the remote to suit but its not impossible,
