Knob of the month award goes to ????

Post by mgbv8 »

ME !! :)

After working late on the car last night all i had to do today was:
1. Fill the cooling system.
2. Fill the gearbox with ATF.
3. Pump up the slicks.

Well 2 out of 3 aint bad eh??

I drained the box to see how much came out. And this proved that I was well short of fluid. After carefully puring back in the 3 litres that came out, I added the next quart of trick shift. This was when I felt something cold on my knee. I fill the tranny from the drivers footwell so was kneeling.

Guess what I forgot to put back in the gearbox ???

You got it.. The bloody drain plug. Have you seen just how far a pool of 4 litres of ATF spreads on the garage floor??

Luckily I had 3 fresh quarts left but had to go to Halford got get 2 litres more for top ups tomorrow.

Funny how a quart of B&M trick shift from the USA costs £4.88 yet a litre of Halford Dex 2 costs £9.00 ??

The car is now on the trailer and the garage is covered in cat litter

 Easy done Pel.

I forgot to put the oil filter on once.
I got called away for a phone call, came back & started the car, noticed the oil light didn't go out so switched it off. Checked the dipstick (no oil), scratched my head (WTF), checked the container of new oil (empty) yet again scratched my head.I had a quick look underneath, no oil puddle.

Anyway to cut a long story short I eventually lay down & had a proper look only to find my drain bucket was still their & I'd just re-filled it.

Come on perry, less of this "quarts" stuff. Were in blighty!
I wouldn't bother with expensive aftemarket oils.
Just like engine oil, just put a good quality normal oil and change it a little more often.
I have a feeling that the trickshift stuff is synthetic - which is was dextron 3 is.

I think i'm running D3 in the 700r4 at the moment actually.

Thats the funny thing Eliot!!
Trick shift from Real Steel is half the price of Halfords advanced stuff ??

Ok so 1 litre is a few ml's more than a US quart. But only about 50ml's more. Certainly not worth an extra £4 for the extra 50ml's eh ??

And the other night we had an engine oil gush while I cranked for comp testing on one bank with the other head off. I wasnt expecting the oil system to prime so fast. That was another mug full of 20/50 on the floor :)

I'm sure I'll make one more gaff this week as this crap normally comes in three's eh :)

Back when I was an Apprentice lad at the local MB dealer, someone left the oil filter off an engine that was having a service, then the Appy started it.....

Our lube bay was an "upstairs/downstairs" affair where the car went onto 2 tracks like a 4 post lift but instead of lifting it up a bloke worked downstairs doing the draining and greasing etc.

There was lots of wailing and moaning when oil came out the hole where there should have been a filter..... on his head, mostly..
Cheers,
John

Easily done Perry! And we've ALL done something similar - all too often at times!

i remember as an apprentice being taught, as a group, the correct way to fit a tap to the bottom of a 5 gallon container, and as the two lads "dropped" it into the rack, took the tap completley off and spilt 5 gallons of coolant all over the floor
So thats where it went !

If we are going back to apprentice days then I also take the award for the following!!

We got shown how to make flange gaskets with a sheet of gasket material and a ball pein hammer. This was before the days where you could go and buy ready made gaskets easily.

I took pride in making a pair of flange gaskets that were very very carefully hammered and trimmed to match the outline of the flanges and the bolt holes.

Me and the other apprentice nipped up the flanges on the 6" water feed pipe from a large water tank. Then it came time to fill and flush the water system. But no water came out ???

Guess which hole we forgot cut in both the gaskets??

YEP!! The one in the middle

now mines not car related but its a good one.

i had my tonsils out last week and have been goofed up on painkillers since.

the other day i fancied a cuppa tea and thought i would try a pot noodle to see if that hurt my throat.

well, in preparing my cuppa tea my wires got crossed. 1 sugar went straight in the noodles.
