I would say you need to keep the rack as close to its original position as you can, otherwise you'll get terrible bump-steer.

Chris.

Well, the done way is always the best. I bought me an x5 oil pump, so while I'm waiting for that to arrive, i flipped the engine upside down on the stand and stripped it out to start making my sump.

the standard pump can infact be moved back to the second to last cap, and a rail can be made, a piece of 3/4 box fits under the pump, with a pipe upwards into the pump, and downwards into the block. the smaller pipe is a bit trickier, as it sits to close to the box to allow a decent angle, so I got some steel brake pipe, did a 90 degree angle, and ran that inside the box, exiting out the other end at a 90 degree angle and into the block. So in effect that is the standard pump plumbed in, but I'm not happy with any way i've come up to drive it, hence why I'm just going to wait for the X5 pump to arrive so I co do the same as the one on this thread :)

Thats a bit of a find. So BMW have already done this before to solve a similar problem? I thought the pump you were using was of an x5 engine?

There is one spanner in the works, this pump is of an N62 valvetronic engine and yes would line up on the journals of the M60/62 unit, but the gear won't..........

On M** unit the oil change is behind the cam chain, on the N62 its in front, did look at this in abit of detail but had already started the work on my X5 pump and its over twice the price of the X5 M62 pump.......

sorry, couldnt quite follow you there, I take it you ment the chain driving the pump is infront of the cam chain, so you mean the sprocket is too far forward to line up with the m60/62 chain? If so, thats just a case of pushing the cog forward on the shaft, bringing the sprocket backwards?

This pump is on egay, and its buy it now for what you paid for your X5 pump....

That N62 pump seems like a better starting point.

I wonder what the n62 sump looks like?

I'm still 1/2 way through doing my pump, ive split it, tuned down the end of the shaft to 8mm, and turned the other end of the m60 pump down the same, I just have to center my drill stock and drill an 7.8m hole either end of my bridging bar, and I've bought me some durafix to solder some ally between the 2 pieces...so i'm commited, but i'm definatly on the lookout for an n62 pump, for when I get round to fitting a bm v8 in my Granny coupe to replace the asmatic rover v8.

I've looked at putting an e36 floor pan/chassis in the coupe, but I'm reluctant to cut the floor out when its all welded and only needing paint again :)

Yeah. you would have to move sprocket back about 30mm ish and the N62 sump has a hole in it, the black round bit is the oil filter which is changed through the sump...........

N62 sump has a hole from side to side for cross shaft for the four wheel drive and is around 4" deep at the front and about 8" at the back.......
