rover v8 breathing

Post by minter »

hi guys,,

what are some of the best ways in helping reduce oil leaks on the rover and helping to breath better,,
currently have blown 3.5 and have a crankcase evacuation setup in place with pipes straight out of breather into headers,,
i'm sure this method is making me smell like a mechanic all the time it stinks!!

i was thinking of changing and going with the two big pipes into a filtered oil catch tank?

your thoughts please,, many thanks.

Show us a picture of your breather setup from the rocker covers.

My 4.6 isnt blown yet. But it breathes heavy. To stop it dripping I ended up converting the oil filler into an open breather on each rocker cover..

I would block the header connections and try a couple of pipes form the rocker covers into the back of the air cleaner. If this works then feed the pipes through a catch tank for the final installation.
Ideally there should be some form of flame trap in the system.

i may try leaving the pipes into headers for now,, and drill another two holes in rocker covers and vent to atmosphere then maybe have them eventually going into catch tank?!?

I suspect you will get fumes under the bonnet unless you feed the two pipes into the inlet system ahead of the charger.

BTW are the current evacuation connections proper items designed to produce suction at the breathers?

What is the bore of the hose connections on the items with the nuts fitted.
Do these have any form of check valve inside?

I guess you have chrome rocker covers, or have drilled holes for the breather grommets into rover ones?

Is this an early 3500 with the breather hole in the top of the block at the back ?

Are the slash cut pipes fitted into the exhaust at the outlets?

Sorry for the questions. We just need to get a handle on how its all fitted.

Can you email photo's?
If so I'll take them and put them up on photobucket if you dont want to set up an account.

Email them to me on perrystephenson7@hotmail.com

Make sure to add a title to the email in capaitals that says ROVER V8 BREATHER PICS so I can find it in the junk pile.

I would think that the effectiveness of this type of evacuation system greatly depends on the position and angle of the connection into the exhaust.
The connection needs to form a sort of venturi effect to work well and suck the fumes out of the crankcase. Done incorrectly and it will pressurise the crankcase.

I assume that some instructions and guidance came with the kit.

Aircraft use a similar thing. Basically, a pipe is introduced into the exhaust gas path and angled so that the passing stream is in line with the drain and the differences in pressure do the rest.

If your drain line is simply welded/connected at 90 degrees then it'll most likely not work at all or not very well, in fact it could pressurise the system it's meant to drain. It has to be facing down flow for it to function.
Cheers,
John
