Some people prefer this method of priming the system as opposed to the age old tradition of packing the pump with vaseline before you start. I wouldn't call it a complete waste of money unless you take the view that you could make one yourself for peanuts with some basic machinery. One thing I would say is if you have to buy one then do so from the ebay member called "loadsofsurplus" as he is a member on this forum! (88incher)

I would say that it's essential (for peace of mind - at least oil is in the right places when it fires).
I made mine with a suitably long M12 bolt. I cut a slot in the head with an angle grinder, the put a blob of weld at each end of the slot. Stick the threaded part of the bolt in a power drill, and away you go!

I made my first one out of an old cold chisel. Took ages to figure out that the RV8 supplement manual for the MGB V8 is wrong, and has the dissy rotation back to front. After about 10 attempts I thought I had done something wrong. Then I checked th firing order on the cap and realised I was going backwards. I was quite happy to see the oil pumping out of the rocker gear after only a few seconds with the battery drill. I ended up buying one from RS as I was spending so much on the other engine stuff, another 15 quid didnt make a lot of difference. The first RV8 I built was done with the vaseline method, and it took about 45 seconds to get the pressure up.
