Fun day at the Pod today !

Post by mgbv8 »

As suspected the rain held up the racing until 1pm. but we had nearly 3 good hours of ragging despite track closures due to crashes and one numpty in a small eurobox leaving the line at full power with his front suspenion jumping up, down and back to front for about 3 seconds when he spat coolant all over the 60 foot area ???

I got one pass in with ign retarded by 6 degree's but no nos cos i forgot to arm the system after my burnout DOH!!

But she still ran a 13.5 @ 100mph.

I came straight back round for run 2 as engine temp was strill ok at 75C after the cruise back. a quick half gallon in the tank and i was back in the queue for about 20 mins. There were only about 100 cars signed on today I reckon.

My 2nd pass was with my 450 shot of gas. I ran the 1/8th on my normal 300 shot which was good as I pulled 103mph @ 6.8 seconds as usual. Then I hit the 2nd stage button. She pulled hard again but after about 2-3 seconds I had a backfire through the carb which blew my bonnet off its hinges

This was just before the 1000 foot marker. I shut it down and hit the brakes until I was slow enough for the rear of the bonnet to drop down so i could see where I was going. I coasted across the line at 70+ mph. But with a flat 12 seconds on the timing lights :)

The fire crew met me at the exit gate to have a look but she was just indling away nicely and I drove her back to the trailer with no issues. It was stasrting to spit with rain so i didnt bother to do any fixing. I went and had a few hours of fun helping mates out in the pits.

Here a clip someone got of the run..

It was a pretty good launch despite a cold track.

Rear tyres hanging on really well. Slapper bars locked up on the springs and the front suspension at full travel but the front tyres just hanging on enough to allow me to steer :)

Perry,

Looks superb off the line and looked like it was going to be a quick one before the backfire.

450 of gas wow, you could probabably done the barbie under the bonnet on one run aswell

Is this with the new block?

Regards,

Kevin.

Hi Perry
I think if you can get another 10 ft lb of torque down to the track you will have the front wheels off the ground, it is pretty close!
Shame about the little bang, I hope it is nothing serious.
Nice to see it all one colour.
Best regards

Car's looking good now Pel, I like your aero mods too- just gotta take those wipers off and stick some tape over all the gaps etc to make it more slippery!

Kev!
Still using the damaged block with filler in the hole around the liner ??

I'll whip the heads off before the weekend to do a check. But she seems to be ok at the mo. It wont hurt to have fresh gaskets and even more glue in there eh?

Tom!
I just wanted to see what I could use a roll of gaffer tape for :)

I'll be home early tomorrow so I can get stripping. We can do a pair of head gaskets on the trailer now in just over 2 hours all in since I modified the inner wings some more. This means I can lfit the heads off with the exhausts still fitted

I just need to tone it down a bit now for next weekend as the inlet charge igniting must mean I'm getting close to what the heads can flow now. I want to do some ing timing check on the 300 shot to see how far I casn retard the spark before she gets slower. Once she gets slower I know where to add more retard for extra gas??

The possibility is that spraying a 450 shot may have pretty much shut the carb down and the inlet charge may even have been trying to creep back out of the carb??

Who knows?? I'll find out on the next test session I guess..

Thanks Phil!
Its great doing this R&D at a DIY level for me. I'm hoping 2011 willl see me going sub 10.5 to start with. Then I'll have a good crack at that 9.99 I've been dreaming of :D

Perry remind me what heads you have? Could you consider fitting bigger ex valves to help get all the crap out faster?

Sussed it!!
Comp test showed all as usual except no6. I can hear air slitting back into the inlet manifold on each comp stroke with the tester fitted. Still got 80psi in there mind?

Inlet valve not sealing properly. That could explain a lot eh? Hot flamey sparky stuff may have been creeping back into the inlet manifold. That wouldnt have helped much i dont think.
Head coming off now for a look see.

And the gasket around the damaged and fillered area on the block has just barely pushed some of the gasket adhesive spray out. So that there glue is the mutts nut I think.. Before I could only get 3 passes before it let go. I did 5 last year after glueing the gasket on and a nasp one on Sunday to make sure all was well before adding the extra 150 shot of nitrous :)

So she lives to fight another day methinks 8)

Perry- did you file the JB weld stuff flat or sand it or some other way? Have you had a straight edge on it to find out if it is completely flush?

Of course I made sure it was flat??

I used a new paint scraper

Damage since the bodge up and the gasket glue is almost nothing.
