Gear lever position on a T5 compared to LT77

Post by daxtojeiro »

Hi all,
Im trying to decide wether to change my LT77 over to a T5 whilst I do an engine change. Currently I have a LT77 that runs perfectly, its the Vittesse SD1 version, so apparently its stronger than the standard box. But as Im going for a 5.4 then maybe a blower I am looking into changing it for a T5.

The issue is that I had to cut the gear shifter unit on the LT77 to allow it to fit the Cobra. This means the shifter is now, roughly, 600mm away from the end of the input shaft.
Anyone know if this is possible to achieve using the T5, as looking at pics of the T5 it doesnt look likely
cheers
Phil

There are several positions you can get with T5's AFIK, the TVR remote & bellhousing combo puts it in the same position as the LT77.

Hi Dave,
I was looking into the TVR bell housing, etc, but as you say, that would put it where the LT77 was before I cut it down, so it wouldn't be of any use.

Any idea what combination it is I need?

Have a closer look at the TVR one, I think you could customize it to put the stick where you want, it has a load of bushes and UJ on the bellhousing that articulate back to the shifter housing... If you cant get one of the standard shifters to work for you. If it was me I'd have a chat with Bernie at CTS about the range of shifters for T5.

depends on what T5 you are using, go for the TVR box and the lever is far forward, Mustang or Cosworth, both have the lever at the back, different input splines, mustangs are canted over to the left, but correction bellhousings should be available from Real steel, IIRC Tailhousing swaps are not straight forward, as 5th gear has to be broken to remove the tail housing.
Gearboxes on their own are not all straight forward with different bellhousing to gearbox patterns, BW have produced over 220 different versions of the venerable T5 in both 2 & 4WD versions, and all are not equal.

I did just that, change from an SD1 LT77 to T5. I used a TVR tremec box. The older ones used a white bracket to move the lever position further forward, the newer TVR boxes had a different tail housing to move the lever position forward.

The lever position was 4" further forward compared to the LT77 (not using the white bracket) I have made a bracket to move this back 4" which was easy enough although I have read the cosworth version of the box would bring the lever out in the same position as the LT77.

Check out the T5 from a TVR speed 6 as these have the gear lever point at the front of the tail housing adjacent to the rear of the main case.
As Ian says the Cosworth gear lever point is at the rear of the tail housing and is some 800mm from the front of the input shaft so not much good for you.

If you Google Racing Green TVR shop there is a view of the speed 6 gearbox.

fantastic, thanks for all the info!! I will get hold of the TVR box and bell housing and see what it looks like. I can always sell it on if its no good.

Tom, does the Rush have to have the lever mechanism cut down like the Tojeiro if using a LT77?
cheers

Hi Phil,

Do you mean cut down in height?
If so then yes, I just cut the lever in half and re-welded the stud on top to take the gear knob.

Nothing changed in length.
