hello. My V8 engine is almost dead (lot of ticking noise in idle, etc) and i want to make one small rebuid on it. I need some advise. Here in Portugal there aren´t necessary information.
I´m thinking these:
head area:
- take off the heads, change all gasket and seals
- new camshaft (OEM cams)
- Complete Standard timing chain set
.Complete set of 16 hydraulic Genuine standard tappets.
FROM RPI-ENGINEERING
Crankshaft area:
- new main bearins
- new oil pump
-new rings
Exhaust:
- new exhaust in stainless steel with 2.75", with Borla Muffler
which are the "key points" /most important changes to make in one V8 engine?
in the future i´m thinking in a m112 eaton supercharger with low boost.

Can I suggest giving V8Tuner or Real Steel a shot first!
If it's a completely standard road going engine then you shouldn't have to worry about too much, worth checking the piston ring gaps in their bores though especially if you are thinking about supercharging it in the future. Maybe get a duplex timing chain in there as well, will last better than a standard one and keep your timing more accurate when it gets worn, what engine is it?

I asked prices for only GENUINE parts but the difference of price is a lot

326£ (genuine) vs 149£ http://www.v8tuner.co.uk/product.php?id=550
do you think that the 149£ stuff have quality too? no problem in install it instead of genuine?
Double timing set i haven´t sure if compensates. what´s the usefull life (in miles) of the standart timing chain?
my engine is a 3.9i V8.
the only upgraded material that i will put in my engine is the performance muffler ( BORLA maybe) with upgraded manifolds, FSE and later the supercharger, only when the engine is fully rebuilded

I re-used a fair bit of kit from my old engine, chains and sprockets were fine. I shim kitted the push rods, if you are fitting adjustable make sure you drill the holes out to fit while the heads are off the engine! My only "upgrade" was a Piper 270 cam which seems to work fine with a nice idle and power up to 5krpm, fitted with standard OE new tappets, standard head and springs.
Lots of stuff is very cheap if you don't go for "performance" mods. I used Tin HG's as I didn't want to lower the CR too much and HG's are easy to change on this engine anyway. I didn't want extra skimming of the heads as I bought them already lightly skimmed, I measured the head-bolts and reused them as well!
It's a lovely engine to work on, above all enjoy yourself!

I think it is worth upgrading from the standard timing gears- even to the single row steel set, the original nylon is not very good. http://www.v8tuner.co.uk/product.php?id=98 is only £10 more than the original. Remember if you can preserve your timing then performance and economy will both stay higher, a sloppy timing set will gradually put your cam andf ignition timing out.
Standard or HD pushrods will be fine, I fitted mine and measured the preload, then took them to a tool sharpening place and they ground each one down the right amount for me to the proper ball radius, IMO much stronger than adjustables and all the perfect length.
I think Paul will be able to advise you on what is fine for reproduction and what you should go OEM, if you want some extra power and are doing a full rebuild then he could also recommend you a mildly upgraded camshaft too?
If you are looking to supercharge in the future it would be a good idea to put ARP studs on the bottom end whilst it is in bits- this will make it stronger as you presumably just have 2 bolts in each main cap? ARP head studs are great too but not required (yet) and can be fitted much easier than main studs at a later date.
Oh- I would also fit HD valve springs- they are slightly stronger and have 1 less coil than standard, handy if you uprate the camshaft and for when you supercharge it. Approx £10 more. If you decide not to I would go with genuine springs, you dont want a breakage! Standard cam followers & rockers etc are fine.

thank you very much,
I has started rebuilding my engine.
The block area is fully rebuilded right now ...now i´m going to heads area.
I will buy these stuff from V8tuner:
1 X http://www.v8tuner.co.uk/product.php?id=98
upgraded camshaft, what do you think about this? --> http://www.v8tuner.co.uk/product.php?id=637
16 X STD cam followers
1 X http://www.v8tuner.co.uk/product.php?id=87 (no stock for now
)
Can i install the upgraded cam without the HD valve springs?
I want +- 240HP.
Do you think with this stuff i can go to my target (240HP) ?
Upgraded cam 22HP
FSE (petrol fuel regulator)
Magnaflow muffler
KN air filter
thank you
