New Clutch but wrong bearing? Marcos LM500

Post by leylandracer »

A change of car from the TR7V8 to a Marcos LM500 and so to its 1st problem :(

I ordered a up-rated Helix Motorsport Clutch & crb, the local garage isfitting it for me, it seems as though they have sent thewrong bearing or havei somthing missing? The Clutch which was in the Marcos was a AP Clutch together with a bearing with a plastic carrier, The Helix clutch just came with a bearing asin the following pics :(

you have the old type bearing....supplied with your new clutch...

but your old bearing and plastic carrier is the newer type....

For your new bearing you need the old metal carrier type and the bearing is just a press fit on the carrier....

the plastic type carrier the bearing is just clipped on.....

and self centring bearings are flat faced....or mine was.....

best option is to find a metal carrier....as didnt like the look of my plastic one...so i modded the carrier at work to fit a new flat type bearing....

hope this helps

yes thats the metal type carrier you need, but it aint cheap.

The bearing just knocks of with some effort...

unless you can find a second hand one, but these must be hard to find now.

good luck

If the clutch pressure fingers are flat, you need a radiused bearing, if the fingers are curved you need a flat bearing. Both your old and new set ups are correct- but you need the cast carrier to go with the bearing that you were supplied with as Scott has already said.

Jim Robinson is very helpful and can probably supply you with one, (JRV8 on here), but as he will tell you there are about 3 different types, oh- and for what they are they aint cheap but not a bank buster!

You have got me worried now :? Re; (, (JRV8 on here), but as he will tell you there are about 3 different types) V8 Developments sent a replacment Today :( But the wrong one, it was the plastic one which was sent) spoke to Ray Today and he has found a cast carrier and sent it out Today, Just hoping its the right one
One thing i did find strange? The plastic carrier seemed really slack on the shaft, much more play then the old one which came out of the car?

The cast carrier arrived today, There's a "but" though :( there seems to be a lot of play when the bearing is on the shaft? i.e. you would think it should be 1.5mm tighter & a nice snug fit, V8D recons this is norm :?:

ah, the joys of Marcos ownership, as a mechanic once said
'I think they all do that mate !'
