Where would be best for my wide band 02 sensor?
Car is a dax rush with rover v8 and side exhausts. The reason I ask is because tech edge the company who supplied my WB02 kit recomends 1 meter from the nearest exhaust port, and a little further if more than 1 header feeds it. Because of this for the old engine I fitted the sensor after the silencer but that's very near the tail pipe which could over cool the sensor and at low gas speeds may be inacurate. Infact after some data logging with MS extra last year it was noted by some other fourm gurus had strange O2 values, which may be explained by being too close to the tail pipe.
I'd like to fit it in the 4 to 1 collector but this less than 1 meter from 4 exhaust ports so i'm worrid I may over heat the sensor?
What do you think?
Thanks,
Tom.

Re: WB O2 sensor position
I have the same unit in my SD1, and fitted it after the two downpipes combine, roughly at the back of the gearbox, and rather farther than 1 metre from the nearest port. I've never seen the heater come on after starting - even on a very cold day. Think fitting a longer boss to raise it out of the stream helps if the gasses are cooler than optimum.SuperV8 wrote:Where would be best for my wide band 02 sensor?

Fitting it way too close is likely to shorten the life. Think I found a graph of temp versus life on the Bosch site.

This may help:-kiwicar wrote:Hi
Normally they are fitted into the collector just where the collector narrows down to the final pipe diamiter, I don't think you want it any further away than that.

You should be able to mount them anywhere you want barring too close to the flame path. As they are heated you cant have them too far away so long as there is still a bit of pipe left after it. You can even stuff them up the end of the exhaust ala MOT test and the will work fine. Downside is that the further away they are the greater the lag between what the engine did and what the sensor sees. Probably no big deal in the real world mind you.
