Running in new RV8
I've recently fitted a 4.6 Turner Engineering unit to my p38 Range Rover.
I've now got the engine running on the running in oil.
What's the best way to run in a new engine over the 500 miles or so before the first oil change? Is it a set procedure?

Re: Running in new RV8
The old way was to give it a variety of tasks, without stressing it - ie not just drive round the M25 at a steady 50 mph. But machining standards are such today many say this isn't needed.rich998a wrote:I've recently fitted a 4.6 Turner Engineering unit to my p38 Range Rover.

As I take it you have run it already then the cam run in routine is out the window, there for just drive it, don't run at a constant revs for more than 4 or 5 minutes for the first 100 miles or so, don't red line it too often and don't labour it in top for long but apart from that drive it normally.

I class the cam bedding in procedure as my running in period.
After that it gets maybe 30 mins tooling around in the pits and idling while I check for leaks, then it gets an oil and filter change.
Then it gets used as normal.

Thanks (as always) for the replies. Went for a slow jaunt this evening. Managed 40 miles...
I did run the vehicle at 2k on first start up but perhaps only for 10 minutes or so. I has to stop the engine briefly to correct a coolant leak, but then started the process again, so maybe 15 minutes at 2k from first start up.
Turners don't really say much except that you should keep the revs down and not stress the engine. They state first oil change at 500 miles or so.
The car has a ZF autobox so it frequently changes revs. Running about for 500 miles like that isn't easy. Not too bad through the country lanes, but otherwise A roads and motorway is really out if the theory about constant revs is true.
I've had lots of information offered to me but with the exception of at least some time at 2k rpm on first start up, pretty much everyone differs in opinion.

If it is proper running in oil that you have then personally I wouldn't leave it in there for 500 miles more like 100-200. By its nature running in oil causes quite a bit more friction so shouldn't be left in for too long. Will it kill your engine if you leave it longer? No it wont, it will probably be fine but its what I was told years ago by the engineering company that did a lot of my engines at the time. If you mean that your using cheap crappy oil for running in oil then ignore the above. As for the rest of it, its all pretty sound advice above.

I wouldn't have thought you would get enough bed in with 500 miles of only 2k rpm, I'd go for up to 3k for about 50 miles, then keep upping it steadily. Running in has to be slightly hard as you need to get pressure behind the rings to keep them tight against the bores, with the correct oil and additive and a 20min session for the cam you shouldn't have to worry about that after its initial period.

you want to be using the engine as normally as you can without labouring it or over revving. Let it see 3.5 k from time to time in between 50 and 100 miles, 4.5 k after that until about 350 miles when you should be just driving it as you would mormally do. treat it too gently and the rings won't bed and you will gum it up with burnt oil glaze. just don't run it for long periods at constant revs.
