knocking in engine

Post by ivysboy »

HELP can anybody shed some some light on a problem with my 3500 earley SD1 engine. when pulling away at about 15 =20 mph there is a knocking from the front of the engine if I close the throttle and then open it the knocking goes, I can do 70-80all day with no noise , it's only when pulling away or going up a long hill, but if I take my foot off the pedal and back on again the knocking stops? any help much appreciated.

the noise sounds like a small end knock? but I was told if it was a small end it would knock all the time? and that it could be the timing chain?

Could it be pinking/knock. Too much ignition advance maybe?

It could be I did all the timing but I have taken the timing cover off and the chain has at least an inch of slack would that cause the timing to fluxuate when pulling away. when standing still it rev's up with no knocking and sounds sweet.

Have you done the timing now and reconnected the pipe or are you leaving it off?
