Rocker Cover Breathing

I don't think the rocker covers on my RV8 3.5 (out of an SDI) engine are originals.
One has the standard chimney flame trap and the other has the disc sat on top of a pipe affair.

As my engine is going into a kit car I am going to use an oil catch can which I assume connects to the flame trap.

As for the disc, well me being a numpty had the covers powder coated and forgot to mask this off so consequently the hole is completely blocked.

Two questions. Am i right in saying the disc should have something on top it? and if so could you provide a link so I know what i'm looking for and secondly am I able to run a drill through the hole to clean the powder coating out?

If I remember correctly the hole in the breather/disc is pretty small at the top end.

Simeon,

If it's a road car forget the catch tank and retain the correct PCV system otherwise the pressure inside the engine can cause oil leaks and excess oil being held in the valve covers.

It is also important to retain the baffle plates inside the tops of the valve covers.

Put the inlet to underneath the carb then, I think a catch tank is ok if the breather pipes are big enough but a pcv is what seems to be normal and what everyone with a V8 runs!

Simeon,

You run it to the large centre port on the front of the Edelbrock, it won't gunge up the carb unless you have a very worn engine.

I have run both of my engines with the system in place for approx 7 years and when I removed the carb recently there was no sign of any oil contamination.

Without a PCV system the internal pressure will force oil into the catch tank, if you really want a catch tank then get the correct type that you can plumb into the PCV sytem and act as a seperator.

Ok then guys you've convinced me, ditch the oil can!

So I put a filter and cover on the disc?

Run a pipe from the flame trap to the centre port on the carb with an inline PCV?

Are you sure it's not the big port at the back?

Correct me if i'm wrong

Youve got it right.

You can use the EGR port on the back if you are using the front centre port for another use.
