RV8 to Ford gearbox...........possible?

Post by Sunbmw »

Hi all, here is my quandry.............

I am just about to embark on building an SD1 For stage rallying, I have at my disposal, a Straight cut, six speed, dog engagement gearbox, based on a Ford MT75 gearbox, which unfortunately has a cast bellhousing.

At weekend I aquired a block which I intend to use (X-bolted) and I offered the box up to see how much of a mountain I have to climb, and to be brutally honest, it doesn't look promising.

Firstly, the Ford bellhousing (it is the Sierra type, not the Transit MT75) is way smaller than that of the Rv8/LT77 so the flywheel Diameter would be to large, then the starter motor location becomes an issue, It looks like I would have to use a Ford flywheel ( I would get this specially made as I will be using an AP twin 7.25" clutch), but drilled for the RV8 Crank, then get an adaptor plate made, but the big issue is I would have to have a small part of the block machined away for the starter, not ideal.

Alternatively (just thought of this actually) I may have to source a Transit Diesel front casing (much larger) and seee how that fares.

Just wondered if anyone else has tried this?

They cant take the power, your going to spend a fortune fitting a box that isnt going to last.
