Rover V8 race engine builder
Moderator: phpBB2 - Administrators
The only person I would recommend to build a Rover race engine is John Eales of JE Developments http://www.rover-v8.com/jeales/web.nsf/ ... endocument Been doing them for years and has a lot of satisfied customers (me being one of them)

Hi C.H
a 5litre build will be reluctant to rev past peak power and will produce its maximum much lower down (300bhp at around 5000 to 5300) so he will end up with relativly narrow power band (though buckets of torque low down). If he is sprinting this engine he will want an engine that can hold a gear after peak power and also pull from down low (hence his relativly modest power requirment for a race engine but the 7K stipulation). I would have a serious look at the 4litre on 48 webbers as I think this may be closer to what he is looking for than a 5 litre+ unit.
Best regards
Mike

John Eales would be my choice too if you have to pay someone else to build it!Cobratone wrote:The only person I would recommend to build a Rover race engine is John Eales of JE Developments http://www.rover-v8.com/jeales/web.nsf/ ... endocument Been doing them for years and has a lot of satisfied customers (me being one of them)

Dominic,
I know Paul at V8 Tuner and he is a very decent person to deal with.
The engine advertised for £5995.00 is speced as a fast road engine and would appear to offer quite a lot for the money, however I would not describe it as a race engine.
That engine appears to be based around a 3.9 bottom end with Pauls stroker kit.
It does have a trapdoor sump but probably only the standard 2 bolt main bearing caps and as such will not be good for consistent high RPM use as in race use, there are also other points that need addressing for an engine that is going to see race use such as a cross drilled and relieved crank, stronger con rods and forged pistons, probably roller rockers with outrigger end supports for the rocker shafts which are essential or the shafts will break at high RPM
plus proper race preparation which makes a big difference in terms of reliability as well as performance.
As you can see all this does add up to a lot off money and is why a full house Rover race engine built by a reputable race engine builder can cost around £10.000.00 A Wildcat engine with not much Rover left in it will cost a lot more.
The oiling system also need to be upgraded for a race engine to provide approx 10psi per 1000RPM.
I would contact Wotland (Dimitri) who lives in Belgium and ask for the full spec of the 4.0 300BHP engine a friend of his has for sale.
The 4.0 and 4.6 engines come as standard with 4 bolt mains and are stronger for race use but the block should preferably have been top hat linered for reliability unless it has been sonic tested and shown to have good wall quickness behind the liners.
These engines also have a better oil system as standard with crank driven oil pumps.
Kevin.

hi, wildcat- Ian richardson is not a builder. His parts are only any good if you use turbos with lots of boost , as they were intended for the triumph bonaviel project .
would not recomend JED at all ,not unless you want lipservice. you could try Dom at TVR power he is doing some supper work or Dave Ellis if you want atention to Quality & detail, I have had engines from him

You sure about some of that Dr Jones?
I've seen NA Wildcat engines make damn good power. No doubt they could make more with forced induction, but then my current Rover (actually almost what the OP wants) would be better with a blower...
Again, my dealings with John Eales have only been good. And I have seen a couple of his engines in the TVR Tuscan challenge making 400bhp (on carbs). Be careful though - there is a company with a very similar name to John's, and they do not seem to have such a good reputation. Is one of us (probably me) getting confused between the two?
Despite having a TVR, I have had virtually nothing to do with TVR power, so I can't comment from my experience other than the engine originally supplied in my TVR having 278 bhp instead of 340...
(They all do that sir!) Note that this wasn't Dom's fault since it happened many years before he was running the show!

You're obviously on drugs, either that or haven't a clue about Rover V8'sDR JONES wrote:would not recomend JED at all ,not unless you want lipservice.
That comment confirms that you definitely DON'T know what you are talking aboutDR JONES wrote:or Dave Ellis if you want atention to Quality & detail, I have had engines from him

Yes wildcat parts were for twin turbo 6ltr mega boost.no doubt at all that made power.Just have to be carefull of the combination you want to apply it to , thats all.
According to Dave Butcher -was the brains at john eals shop , his tuscan motors never did over 340bhp. John had not got 400bhp combination till he got his hands on some kit Dave Ellis had made by Dave Crower and Heads from Performance unlimited.
the other firm with the similar name you must be talking about is JE enginering - siskin drive.
