Engine code symbols

Post by alastair_vns »

Hi
I have just bought a rover v8 engine that I am trying to find out some info on. The engine numbers on the block are scratched but on both sides there are symbols which look like wheels does anyone know what they are? Also can the numbers on the bottom of the block behind the starter be used to findany info? Thanks in advance.

The number on the block is the casting code, and this can be used to identify it in a broad sense. For example, 4.0 and 4.6 litre engines have the same block casting code. The crankshaft, rods and pistons then verify one or the other.

What is the code number?

No,...those are not the block cast codes. There is an alpha numeric code,..example HRC 2411.

These are the numbers which are behind the starter motor(can we find any infowith these?), the block cast numbers are unreadable apart from the 2 symbols on each side of where it is, do you know what the symbols would be? thanks

Look on the other side of the block, towards the rear of the engine. Can you see an alpha numeric number?

Does the block feature cross bolts? If not are there bosses cast into the block to accomodate cross bolts but have not been drilled?

How many bolt holes in the block deck to retain the cylinder heads? If the heads are fitted, how many bolts are there per head?

All this info can narrow the type of block down. The numbers you have so far to my knowledge are of no help

Hi I cant see a number on the back of the engine, there is also bosses i think, the heads have 9 bolts on each side. The heads have slightly larger exhaust ports to my 3.5 rangerover engine.
Thanks again

Pop a rocker cover off and have a look at the head casting number - It sounds to me like an early 3.5 SD1 engine.

What water pump and what dizzy has it got fitted to it.
What does the crank pulley look like how many belt pulleys
Is it carb or injection
If Carbs what carbs are they SU or Strombergs

Best bet is to post a picture really - will be much quicker.
